16/10/2019  Class 5  Happy Valley  Turf  C  1800m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 040-000

On arrival at the Start, it was noted that DRAGON WARRIOR had lost its right front plate. DRAGON WARRIOR was replated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. GOLDEN KID was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, ROMANTIC JOURNEY was steadied to obtain cover in the early stages. Approaching the 1000 Metres, MONEY MARSHAL shifted out and was awkwardly placed inside the heels of COME ON WONGCHOY. ASSOCIATION FANS, which was racing outside MONEY MARSHAL, was inconvenienced in consequence. Passing the 900 Metres, MONEY MARSHAL shifted in of its own accord and brushed the running rail. After the 700 Metres, YOUNG GLORY and OUR GREEN raced tight as YOUNG GLORY attempted to shift to the outside of DRAGON WARRIOR. Passing the 600 Metres, DRAGON WARRIOR momentarily raced in restricted room inside KEEP GOING which got its head on the side and lay in. KEEP GOING then became unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by DRAGON WARRIOR. At the entrance to the Straight, SKY GEM was shifted in away from the heels of COME ON WONGCHOY. DRAGON WARRIOR had some difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 250 Metres. Passing the 200 Metres, SKY GEM was shifted out away from the heels of MEGATRON to continue improving. ASSOCIATION FANS lay in under pressure in the Straight. After the race, it was noted that MEGATRON’s left hind plate had shifted during the race. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MONEY MARSHAL, L Hewitson stated that whilst the horse was inclined to lay in with him at its most recent start, tonight racing at Happy Valley the horse was inclined to lay in worse than it did at its previous starts. He said MONEY MARSHAL was reluctant to shift away from the rail and then did not finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of MONEY MARSHAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of MEGATRON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. SKY GEM, ASSOCIATION FANS and ROMANTIC JOURNEY were sent for sampling.

As the start was effected, BEST SMILE became fractious and lunged at the front gates, resulting in the gate opening marginally prior to the remaining gates. As the Stewards were satisfied that BEST SMILE had not gained an advantage as a result of the gate being forced opened fractionally prior to the other starting gates, no further action was taken. VEGA RHYTHM was checked on jumping when crowded for room between E GENERATION and MEHBOOB which shifted in. In this incident, MEHBOOB became unbalanced as a result of bumping VEGA RHYTHM. TANG TREASURE got its head up on jumping when being steadied to obtain cover. DEMONS ROCK and HAPPY GOOD GUYS bumped at the start. After this, DEMONS ROCK was steadied to obtain cover. When being ridden along in the early stages, SAM’S LOVE shifted out a short distance after the start and made contact with PRAWN YEAH YEAH. Then making the turn after the 600 Metres, TANG TREASURE was bumped by MEHBOOB and shifted out, resulting in DEMONS ROCK being hampered and taken wider. Passing the 300 Metres, MEHBOOB was shifted out away from the heels of HAPPY GOOD GUYS to obtain clear running. PRAWN YEAH YEAH was held up for clear running from after the 250 Metres until approaching the winning post and consequently was not able to be properly tested. Approaching the 100 Metres, WINNING WAYS raced tight outside MEHBOOB. SAM’S LOVE had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 100 Metres and consequently was not ridden out all the way to the end of the race. A veterinary inspection of BEST SMILE immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, BEST SMILE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of LOOK ERAS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. FAITHFUL TRINITY shifted in at the start and bumped RIGHTEOUS MATE which became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of MURRAY’S PARTNERS which also became unbalanced. From wide barriers, ROYAL RACER and ELECTRIC LIGHTNING were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover. Despite being vigorously ridden along for some distance in the early stages, DIAMOND LEGEND failed to muster speed and then after the 1000 Metres was left racing wide and without cover. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MASTER ROMAN momentarily raced tight inside MURRAY’S PARTNERS which shifted in before being directed out to relieve the tightening to MASTER ROMAN. When MURRAY’S PARTNERS was shifted out, FAITHFUL TRINITY, which was racing to that horse’s outside, was taken wider. After this, when being steadied to obtain cover behind MURRAY’S PARTNERS, MASTER ROMAN travelled keenly. Approaching the 1100 Metres, BUNDLE OF ENERGY was awkwardly placed behind MASTER ROMAN. ROYAL RACER, which was following, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of BUNDLE OF ENERGY in consequence. ELECTRIC LIGHTNING, which was following ROYAL RACER, was also inconvenienced. FAITHFUL TRINITY travelled wide and without cover until approaching the 1000 Metres at which time the horse was allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead. Approaching the 1000 Metres, MURRAY’S PARTNERS raced in restricted room inside the heels of FAITHFUL TRINITY which lay in. Near the 650 Metres, ELECTRIC LIGHTNING was inconvenienced when taken wider by BUNDLE OF ENERGY which shifted to the outside of MASTER ROMAN to commence improving. Then making the turn after the 600 Metres, ELECTRIC LIGHTNING was further inconvenienced when bumped by BUNDLE OF ENERGY which itself raced tight outside MASTER ROMAN which shifted out. Passing the 500 Metres, FULL POWER and BUNDLE OF ENERGY raced tight as both horses attempted to improve into tight running between RIGHTEOUS MATE and MASTER ROMAN. J Moreira was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. After the race, H T Mo was unable to offer any real excuse for the disappointing performance of CURLING LUXURY. He said whilst the circumstances of the race were different from its most recent start, in his opinion, the horse may not have backed up from that run 10 days ago. A veterinary inspection of CURLING LUXURY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of FAITHFUL TRINITY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. BUNDLE OF ENERGY, RIGHTEOUS MATE and KIRAM were sent for sampling.

16/10/2019  Happy Valley  Race 4 Steward Report

16/10/2019  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  C  1800m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 060-040

CHEERFUL STAR began awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced GOOD DAYS. DREAM WARRIORS was crowded for room on jumping between GODSPEED which shifted out and GARLIC YEAH which shifted in after beginning awkwardly. GARLIC YEAH was then crowded for room a short distance after the start between DREAM WARRIORS which continued to race tight outside GODSPEED and BULLISH GLORY which shifted in. After this, BULLISH GLORY was steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. After shifting in to race outside the leader MISTER MONTE after passing the winning post on the first occasion, DREAM WARRIORS commenced to travel keenly approaching and passing the 1200 Metres and was consequently allowed to improve its position forward of MISTER MONTE to obtain the outright lead near the 1000 Metres. At the 900 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was shifted out to commence to improve its position and after this travelled wide and without cover. C Schofield (BULLISH GLORY) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of MISTER MONTE, resulting in MISTER MONTE being dictated inwards and causing that horse to shift in and crowd CHEERFUL STAR. As a result of being dictated inwards and making contact with CHEERFUL STAR, MISTER MONTE became badly unbalanced and shifted in further, resulting in CHEERFUL STAR being badly crowded for room outside DREAM WARRIORS which was hampered. C Schofield was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 6 November 2019 and to expire on Sunday, 10 November 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Schofield’s good race riding record. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FAMILY LEADER, Z Purton stated that he had to make considerable use of FAMILY LEADER in the early stages to take up a forward position as instructed. He said it was not until approaching the winning post on the first occasion that he was able to steady FAMILY LEADER with a view to obtaining a trailing position behind DREAM WARRIORS. He said due to DREAM WARRIORS obtaining a position outside MISTER MONTE and as THE FULL BLOOM was maintaining its position to the inside of FAMILY LEADER, FAMILY LEADER was left racing wide and without cover until near the 1000 Metres at which time the horse was able to shift in to race outside MISTER MONTE. He said FAMILY LEADER did not travel well at any stage of the race and he had to niggle it along prior to the 800 Metres to maintain its position. He said he slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip after the 800 Metres as FAMILY LEADER was struggling to maintain its position. He added he continued to ride his mount along approaching and passing the 700 Metres, however, FAMILY LEADER would not respond to his riding and did not improve its position. He said after the 600 Metres he was required to ride FAMILY LEADER aggressively, however, the horse commenced to give ground after the 500 Metres and became unbalanced in its action near the 450 Metres. Having regard to the manner in which FAMILY LEADER had failed to travel throughout the race and the manner in which it gave ground, he was concerned that something may have been amiss with the horse and therefore he eased it down in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of FAMILY LEADER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of FAMILY LEADER, favourite for tonight’s race and which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, FAMILY LEADER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Mr C Fownes, the trainer of FAMILY LEADER, will be interviewed regarding the horse’s performance prior to the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 20 October 2019. When questioned regarding the performance of SANGRIA, U Rispoli stated that the horse travelled satisfactorily in the early and middle stages, however, as he attempted to follow BULLISH GLORY forward prior to the 500 Metres, SANGRIA did not quicken with that horse and came under pressure. He said, despite being ridden along rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, SANGRIA did not improve its position and lost ground on BULLISH GLORY. He added after this SANGRIA was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of SANGRIA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of DREAM WARRIORS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. FAMILY LEADER, KING’S MAN and BULLISH GLORY were sent for sampling. <20/10/2019 16 October 2019 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 4 (100)>The Stewards today questioned Mr C Fownes, the trainer of FAMILY LEADER, regarding the disappointing performance of that horse. Mr Fownes explained that FAMILY LEADER had done well in the lead up to this race and he expected the horse to perform accordingly. He said whilst he did not give any specific instructions on how FAMILY LEADER should be ridden, he expected the horse, which was third up, to race in a forward position, however, it was hoped that it would be able to obtain cover. He said Z Purton, the rider of FAMILY LEADER, had to make more use of the horse in the early stages than anticipated to take up a forward position, however, he expected that it would be able to finish off the race better than it did. He added FAMILY LEADER had pulled up satisfactorily after the race and therefore he was not able to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. As previously reported, FAMILY LEADER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.

Apprentice K H Chan (HEAVENLY THOUGHT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1600 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CROWN AVENUE, causing that horse to be crowded for room and be checked away from the heels of HEAVENLY THOUGHT and to shift in and crowd the room of RULE THEE which lost its rightful running. Apprentice Chan was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 23 October 2019 and to expire on Monday, 28 October 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). Approaching the 50 Metres, FOCUS raced tight inside HOLEE MONEY which shifted in before being corrected by its rider and shifting out to relieve the momentary crowding to FOCUS. In this incident, FOCUS brushed the hindquarters of CONFUCIUS DAY which then became unbalanced and shifted in marginally, resulting in LIGHTNING STEED, which was attempting to improve into tight running inside CONFUCIUS DAY, being steadied and in turn shifting in and crowding the room of NICE KICK which became unbalanced. This resulted in LIGHTNING STEED being checked away from the heels of CONFUCIUS DAY over the concluding stages. Because of this incident, both CONFUCIUS DAY and in particular LIGHTNING STEED were not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race. As the Stewards were satisfied that LIGHTNING STEED had not fully established running to the inside of CONFUCIUS DAY prior to that horse shifting in after becoming unbalanced, no further action was taken. Very close to the finishing line, FOCUS shifted out and made contact with HOLEE MONEY which became unbalanced.
