At declaration time, Z Purton was declared as the rider of both TRUST ME and EIGHT TRIGRAMS. It was established that Z Purton had a firm commitment to ride TRUST ME. As such, the Stewards permitted M F Poon to be substituted as the rider of EIGHT TRIGRAMS. For this declaration error, Trainer D J Hall was fined $2,000. Just prior to the start being effected, ROCKET HAMMER became fractious, turned its head to the right and was subsequently slow to begin. FABULOUS EIGHT began only fairly and then lost ground when checked due to being crowded for room between EIGHT TRIGRAMS and REGENCY POET which shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. In this incident, EIGHT TRIGRAMS became unbalanced as a result of contact on the hindquarters from FABULOUS EIGHT. DREAM TEAM, which was drawn outside EIGHT TRIGRAMS, stumbled when checked as a result of being crowded for room between BESTA LUCK and EIGHT TRIGRAMS which shifted out. BESTA LUCK shifted out at the start and bumped SHANGHAI LAD. DECISIVE TWELVE began only fairly. HERE COMES TED and REGENCY POET were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover. DRAGON HAS LANDED shifted out at the start and hampered UNIQUE TREASURE. SUPER JUNIOR shifted out at the start and made contact with LITTLE WISE MAN. After travelling a short distance, GREAT TREASURE was bumped by PURE LEGEND which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HARMONY SPIRIT. From a wide barrier, HERCULES was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Near the 800 Metres, CALIFORNIA TURBO was left racing wide and without cover. Passing the 600 Metres, UNIQUE TREASURE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPER JUNIOR. LITTLE WISE MAN, which was following, commenced to prove difficult to settle and was checked out away from the heels of UNIQUE TREASURE passing the 550 Metres. As UNIQUE TREASURE was improving into tight running between PURE LEGEND and SUPER JUNIOR at the 500 Metres, SUPER JUNIOR got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in UNIQUE TREASURE being momentarily crowded for room. Passing the 400 Metres, UNIQUE TREASURE was awkwardly placed inside PURE LEGEND which lay in. Near the 75 Metres, UNIQUE TREASURE shifted out away from DRAGON HAS LANDED and was consequently awkwardly placed inside the heels of TAKE WHAT YOU NEED. UNIQUE TREASURE was then eased when crowded for room between TAKE WHAT YOU NEED and DRAGON HAS LANDED (M F Poon) which shifted out. M F Poon was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that LITTLE WISE MAN had bled from both nostrils. As this was the second consecutive occasion that LITTLE WISE MAN was reported to have bled in a race, the Stewards referred the matter to the Department of Veterinary Regulation, Welfare and Biosecurity Policy for review, however, the normal restrictions applicable to a horse in these circumstances will apply. A veterinary inspection of UNIQUE TREASURE (K Teetan) immediately following the race found that horse to have weal marks over its right flank. K Teetan was fined $5,000. A veterinary inspection of SUPER JUNIOR immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. TAKE WHAT YOU NEED, VICTORIAM and GREAT TREASURE were sent for sampling. <6/4/2020 Additional Veterinary Report>UNIQUE TREASURE was examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P F Yiu this morning. He said at that time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg with a swollen and sore left front fetlock. Before being allowed to race again, UNIQUE TREASURE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

FURORE began only fairly. From the outside barrier, FAT TURTLE was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WAIKUKU, J Moreira stated that, from the inside barrier, he was able to obtain a good position behind the speed. He said WAIKUKU travelled well until near the 550 Metres at which stage the horse came under pressure. He said, despite being ridden along, WAIKUKU did not quicken and came under heavy pressure rounding the Home Turn. He said at no stage did WAIKUKU respond to his riding in the early part of the Straight as it had when ridden by him in the past. He said the most disappointing element of today’s race was the fact that WAIKUKU gave ground over the final 200 Metres. He said after the race he was not able to identify any reason for the horse’s performance. He added whilst the horse had not raced for some time, he had ridden it in two barrier trials in preparation for today’s race and WAIKUKU had performed satisfactorily in both of those trials. Mr J Size, the trainer of WAIKUKU, said that whilst the horse had done well in the stable since its last start success in January, today’s disappointing performance indicated that its two most recent wins may have taken more out of the horse than thought. He said the two barrier trials in which the horse had participated since its last start were both satisfactory and he believed that it would perform well today. He said he will monitor WAIKUKU in the coming days to see how it pulls up after the race. A veterinary inspection of WAIKUKU immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of WAIKUKU, a last start winner and favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WAIKUKU will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WAIKUKU, BEAUTY GENERATION and KA YING STAR were sent for sampling.

ALLOY STAR was withdrawn on 4.4.20 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FLYING PHOTOS (H N Wong). Before being allowed to race again, ALLOY STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WITNESS HUNTER began only fairly. FLYING PHOTOS was crowded for room on jumping between LORIZ and FOREVER SHARP which shifted out. CHAIRMAN LO shifted out abruptly at the start, resulting in DOUBLE TAKE being hampered. MOTHER WISHES was crowded for room on jumping between RED ZOFFANY and SMILING CITY which shifted in. After this, from a wide barrier, MOTHER WISHES was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Also from a wide barrier, STARLIGHT was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. For some distance after the 1300 Metres, FLYING PHOTOS got its head on the side, lay in towards the hindquarters of FOREVER SHARP and was awkwardly placed outside that horse. FLYING PHOTOS continued to race greenly and got its head up for some distance after the 1250 Metres and was awkwardly placed behind FOREVER SHARP. This resulted in FLYING PHOTOS being awkwardly placed for some distance and after the 1100 Metres losing ground when momentarily placed in restricted room between CASIMIRO and CHAIRMAN LO which shifted out slightly. After the 800 Metres, DOUBLE TAKE brushed the running rail and became unbalanced. Passing the 700 Metres, FOREVER SHARP was awkwardly placed close to the heels of RED ZOFFANY and near the 650 Metres shifted out away from the heels of that horse and bumped the hindquarters of CASIMIRO. When FOREVER SHARP shifted out, CHAIRMAN LO and FORTUNATE RUNNER, which were racing outside that horse, were forced wider. Approaching the 500 Metres, STARLIGHT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING PHOTOS. When being ridden along rounding the Home Turn, BABY STORM got its head on the side and lay out. Passing the 400 Metres, WITNESS HUNTER was awkwardly placed behind DOUBLE TAKE. After the 300 Metres, MOTHER WISHES shifted out under pressure, requiring its rider to stop riding and straighten his mount. Throughout the race, SMILING CITY travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of WITNESS HUNTER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. KA YING EXCELLENT and LORIZ were sent for sampling.

HELENE CHARISMA began only fairly. FAST MOST FURIOUS, HELENE LEADINGSTAR and HO HO KHAN were all steadied in the early stages to obtain cover. DARK DREAM travelled wide and without cover until after the 1000 Metres at which stage the horse shifted in to race outside the lead. Passing the 1000 Metres, CHEFANO momentarily raced in restricted room between TIME TO CELEBRATE and DARK DREAM. Making the turn after the 900 Metres, BUTTERFIELD lay in, brushed the running rail and became unbalanced. HELENE CHARISMA, which was following that horse, was steadied in consequence. Near the 450 Metres, HELENE CHARISMA was checked away from the heels of BUTTERFIELD. Passing the 400 Metres, HELENE CHARISMA was shifted in away from the heels of DARK DREAM which was giving ground. At the entrance to the Straight, BUTTERFIELD was shifted to the inside of TIME TO CELEBRATE and improved into very tight running inside that horse which then shifted in marginally. This resulted in BUTTERFIELD being crowded for room and bumping the hindquarters of TIME TO CELEBRATE near the 350 Metres, causing both horses to become unbalanced. In this incident, HELENE CHARISMA, which was following and was attempting to shift to the outside of TIME TO CELEBRATE, was shifted in away from the heels of that horse to continue improving. After the race, Z Purton (DARK DREAM) reported that although the horse travelled wide in the early and middle stages, in his opinion, DARK DREAM was entitled to finish off the race better than it did. He said DARK DREAM came under pressure at the 600 Metres and then gave ground abruptly rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight. A veterinary inspection of DARK DREAM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of DARK DREAM, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DARK DREAM will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of TIME TO CELEBRATE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HELENE LEADINGSTAR and BUTTERFIELD were sent for sampling.

VICTORY VISION began only fairly and then lost ground when steadied away from the heels of EVEN KEEL which was bumped by VIGOR CHAMP. STARSHIP began only fairly. MY WINNER began very awkwardly and made contact with the outside of its gate. Then from the outside barrier, MY WINNER was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. HAPPY ICHIBAN lost its right front plate at the start. From wide barriers, PLIKCLONE and PARTY EVERYDAY were steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching and passing the 1300 Metres, KING DRAGON got its head up and travelled keenly when being steadied to obtain cover. After the 900 Metres, HAPPY ICHIBAN was left racing wide and without cover. Near the 550 Metres, MY WINNER attempted to improve into tight running between PLIKCLONE and PARTY EVERYDAY. Then after racing tight between PLIKCLONE and PARTY EVERYDAY, MY WINNER was shifted to the inside of PLIKCLONE passing the 500 Metres when unable to proceed between PARTY EVERYDAY and PLIKCLONE which was taken out by DEFINING MOMENT. After the 400 Metres, PLIKCLONE raced in restricted room between PARTY EVERYDAY and DEFINING MOMENT. Passing the 100 Metres, GO BALLISTIC shifted in under pressure, requiring its rider to correct his mount. In the Straight, ENJOY LIFE shifted out under pressure, requiring its rider to stop riding and straighten his mount on a number of occasions. The performance of EVEN KEEL, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, EVEN KEEL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned regarding his riding of CROWN AVENUE in the early and middle stages, Apprentice C Wong stated that it was felt that the race would not be run at a good tempo and therefore, from a wide barrier, it would be available to him to obtain a forward position. He said he was instructed to try and lead, however, if another horse showed more speed than CROWN AVENUE, he could sit outside that horse. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode his mount hard in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a forward position, however, HAPPY ICHIBAN, which was drawn immediately to the inside of CROWN AVENUE, showed superior speed in the early stages and was able to take up a forward position. He said in order to comply with his instructions, he continued to ride his mount along throughout the early stages to have it improve its position around HAPPY ICHIBAN which was racing in a three wide position outside EVEN KEEL. He said after the 1200 Metres HAPPY ICHIBAN was steadied in an attempt to obtain cover and he felt that it would be in CROWN AVENUE’s best interests to continue forward of that horse which would also result in him fulfilling his instructions. He added he had to continue to ride CROWN AVENUE along until the 900 Metres at which stage the horse was then able to clear both HAPPY ICHIBAN and EVEN KEEL and raced outside the lead. Apprentice Wong was advised that his riding of CROWN AVENUE in the early and middle stages of the race did not meet the standard expected of a rider in Hong Kong. He was told that whilst he has an obligation to attempt to ride to his instructions, he must show judgement when not able to comply with those instructions to ensure that his mounts are able to finish off their races as best as they can in the circumstances. A veterinary inspection of CROWN AVENUE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. The performance of CROWN AVENUE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CROWN AVENUE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of STARSHIP immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. A veterinary inspection of KING DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. DEFINING MOMENT and ENJOY LIFE were sent for sampling.

AETHERO, which began only fairly, was then checked on jumping when crowded for room between FULL OF BEAUTY and MR STUNNING which was taken out by VOYAGE WARRIOR (C Y Ho) which began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. In this incident, MR STUNNING also lost ground when crowded for room and FULL OF BEAUTY became unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by AETHERO. After the race, C Y Ho reported that his left knee made heavy contact with the outside gate in this incident. C Y Ho was subsequently examined by the Chief Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagements. From the outside barrier, D B PIN was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 900 Metres, BIG PARTY and THANKS FOREVER bumped. Passing the 900 Metres, AETHERO shifted in away from BIG PARTY and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HOT KING PRAWN. AETHERO then got its head up when being checked away from the heels of BIG PARTY (K C Leung) which shifted in. After this, AETHERO got its head up for some distance when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed behind BIG PARTY. As the Stewards were satisfied that AETHERO’s racing manners at this time had largely contributed to this incident, they elected not to issue a charge of careless riding against K C Leung. However, he was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Near the 550 Metres, THANKS FOREVER was bumped by AETHERO (Z Purton) when racing tight outside that horse as a result of AETHERO improving to the outside of BIG PARTY. Z Purton was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Passing the 300 Metres, HOT KING PRAWN was shifted to the inside of VOYAGE WARRIOR after being disappointed for running between that horse and BIG PARTY. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of AETHERO, Z Purton stated that as it did at its first up run this season AETHERO did not begin well which resulted in the horse being in a position to be crowded for room. He said the manner in which the horse began together with the crowding resulted in AETHERO having to race behind runners today and when in this position AETHERO did not settle and got its head up for a considerable distance after the 900 Metres due to its own racing manners and also being crowded for room inside BIG PARTY. He said this was similar to the manner in which the horse reacted when behind runners at its first up run this season. He said AETHERO never travelled comfortably and also did not seem to appreciate the loose surface which had been cut up by earlier races. He said he placed AETHERO under heavy pressure after the 400 Metres, however, the horse did not respond and gave ground noticeably over the latter stages. He added having regard to the manner in which the horse began and raced today and the similarities between today’s race and its first up race this season, he was of the opinion that AETHERO may derive benefit from its first up run. A veterinary inspection of AETHERO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. The performance of AETHERO, which finished at the tail of the field as favourite, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, AETHERO will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AETHERO, VOYAGE WARRIOR and HOT KING PRAWN were sent for sampling.

WELL DRAGON was crowded for room on jumping between EL JEFE and SPEEDY LUCK, both of which shifted ground. In this incident, EL JEFE and SPEEDY LUCK also bumped. DAILY BEAUTY was bumped at the start by BRAVE BABY which, after beginning awkwardly, was taken out by MULTIMAX. After this, DAILY BEAUTY was shifted across behind runners from the outside barrier. Also from a wide barrier, EPTIWINS was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. Approaching the 900 Metres, DUBLIN STAR was steadied away from the heels of SO WE JOY which was steadied away from the heels of HAPPY TANGO (C Schofield) which shifted in when not properly clear. When DUBLIN STAR was steadied in this incident, it shifted in and was awkwardly placed outside the heels of THIS IS CHARISMA. C Schofield was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. After the 300 Metres, EL JEFE (Z Purton) got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of THIS IS CHARISMA and near the 250 Metres became unbalanced after bumping with THIS IS CHARISMA which also shifted in marginally. EL JEFE again shifted out near the 200 Metres and bumped THIS IS CHARISMA which was taken in by MULTIMAX which, after initially being taken in marginally by HAPPY TANGO, then got its head on the side and shifted in away from that horse. This resulted in both THIS IS CHARISMA and EL JEFE becoming badly unbalanced and EL JEFE losing ground when crowded for room outside TAILOR MADE. The Stewards were satisfied that there was no rider carelessness involved in this incident. Z Purton stated that EL JEFE lay out rounding the Home Turn and then continued to lay out in the Straight. He said at the time that his mount encountered difficulties inside THIS IS CHARISMA, EL JEFE was beginning to close off the race satisfactorily and, in his opinion, the horse will be suited by stepping up in distance at its future starts and also by gaining more experience racing around a bend. A veterinary inspection of EL JEFE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. For the majority of the race, TRUE LEGEND travelled wide and without cover. TRUE LEGEND then made the Home Turn awkwardly and in the Straight raced greenly and shifted ground on a number of occasions. When questioned regarding the improved performance of VOYAGE STAR, Trainer T P Yung stated that today’s win was not anticipated by him. He said VOYAGE STAR has breathing issues and after the horse disappointed at its last start over 1650 Metres at Happy Valley, he decided to bring it back in distance to 1200 Metres. He said he felt that the improved performance could be attributed to obtaining an uncontested lead. He said he was not able to offer any other explanation for the turnaround in performance today. After the race, C Y Ho stated that after being able to obtain a position in front of midfield THIS IS CHARISMA travelled satisfactorily in the early and middle stages. He said he placed the horse under pressure rounding the Home Turn and THIS IS CHARISMA initially finished off the race one-paced, however, after being crowded for room and becoming unbalanced near the 200 Metres, THIS IS CHARISMA then gave ground over the concluding stages. He said as the horse was beaten he did not test it close to the finishing line. He added that this was THIS IS CHARISMA’s first start at Sha Tin today and that this may have played a part in the horse’s disappointing performance. A veterinary inspection of THIS IS CHARISMA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of TRUE LEGEND and DAILY BEAUTY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. DUBLIN STAR, VOYAGE STAR and EPTIWINS were sent for sampling.

Before being allowed to race again, WISDOM PATCH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When proceeding to the barriers, G van Niekerk was dislodged from ELIGERE without incident. On arrival at the Start, ELIGERE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. SACRED IBIS began only fairly and then stumbled shortly after the start. Then despite being ridden along for some distance, SACRED IBIS became detached from the field in the early stages. STAR LUCK shifted in at the start and inconvenienced LA YAKFI. MAGIC SUPREME made the turn after the 900 Metres awkwardly. Then passing the 800 Metres, MAGIC SUPREME was awkwardly placed close to the heels of KA YING LEGEND. Throughout the race, BIG FORTUNE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PING HAI BRAVO, J Moreira stated that he was able to obtain a good position behind the speed in the early stages. He said after shifting to the outside of FIRST RESPONDER at the entrance to the Straight, PING HAI BRAVO did not quicken as it had previously when ridden by him which he attributed to the horse not appreciating the loose surface. He said although fully tested in the Straight, PING HAI BRAVO did not finish off the race as anticipated. A veterinary inspection of PING HAI BRAVO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of PING HAI BRAVO, a last start winner and favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PING HAI BRAVO will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of STAY CHILL and BIG FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. PING HAI BRAVO, KA YING LEGEND and ELIGERE were sent for sampling.
