03/03/2021  Class 5  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1650m   Going: GOOD  (2.71)   Rating: 037-025

ALL BEST FRIENDS was slow to begin and then was bumped by TAILOR MADE which shifted in. HUMBLE STEED got its head up on jumping and then was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. After the 1000 Metres, LUCKY TURBO was left racing wide and without cover. Approaching the 800 Metres, GALAXY RACER commenced to travel keenly and was awkwardly placed behind TAILOR MADE. Passing the 400 Metres, HAPPY HOUR shifted out abruptly away from the heels of STRAPPING BAUHINIA. Near the 350 Metres, CAN’T TOUCH THIS momentarily raced tight inside FAIRY FLOSS. Passing the 300 Metres, GALAXY RACER raced tight outside ALL BEST FRIENDS which shifted out to improve to the outside of TAILOR MADE which was racing tight outside NITRO EXPRESS. GALAXY RACER and ALL BEST FRIENDS again raced tight passing the 200 Metres. Passing the 50 Metres, GALAXY RACER got its head on the side and lay in and proved difficult to ride over the concluding stages. Close to the finishing line, TAILOR MADE and ALL BEST FRIENDS bumped. When questioned, B Shinn stated that he was instructed to ride FAIRY FLOSS in a midfield position or behind midfield from barrier 8. He said FAIRY FLOSS began well without being ridden along and he immediately took hold of his mount with a view to steadying it to obtain cover. He said, in his opinion, the tempo of the race in the early stages was only moderate and when he observed STRAPPING BAUHINIA, which was drawn immediately to the inside of FAIRY FLOSS, being aggressively ridden, he elected to shift over with that horse and take advantage of the moderate tempo and obtain a trailing position in front of midfield. He said he continued to follow STRAPPING BAUHINIA forward passing the winning post on the first occasion, however, when NITRO EXPRESS improved its position inside STRAPPING BAUHINIA and STRAPPING BAUHINIA was then steadied to allow both BABY STORM and CAN’T TOUCH THIS to improve, this resulted in FAIRY FLOSS being left in a three wide position behind the speed. He added near the 1050 Metres FAIRY FLOSS was left racing without cover when CAN’T TOUCH THIS improved to be racing outside of BABY STORM and rather than continue to race in a three wide position without cover, he allowed FAIRY FLOSS to improve its position to eventually race outside BABY STORM when CAN’T TOUCH THIS improved forward of that horse near the 900 Metres. He said the circumstances of the race and, in particular the tempo of the race in the early stages, resulted in FAIRY FLOSS racing in a more forward position this evening. A veterinary inspection of BABY STORM and STRAPPING BAUHINIA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of LUCKY TURBO immediately following the race found that horse to have blood at the mouth. ALL BEST FRIENDS and TAILOR MADE were sent for sampling.

03/03/2021  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1650m   Going: GOOD  (2.71)   Rating: 059-042

SMILING FACE, AEROSONIC and COSMO CLASSIC, which began awkwardly, were all crowded for room on jumping between LADY FIRST and RUN RUN GOOD which, after initially being directed out by LUCKY MISSILE, then shifted out away from that horse. This resulted in AEROSONIC and COSMO CLASSIC losing ground. GOLD 'N’ BOLD shifted out at the start and bumped THE SUBMARINE. Then from the outside barrier, THE SUBMARINE was steadied to obtain cover in the early stages. OWNERS’ STAR and BLAZING BEAT bumped heavily at the start. Passing the 1600 Metres, RUN RUN GOOD was momentarily eased away from the heels of LADY FIRST (Apprentice C L Chau) which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Chau was advised to exercise due care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. A short distance after this, SMILING FACE was steadied away from the heels of RUN RUN GOOD which shifted out marginally. Approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, AEROSONIC travelled keenly. After the 1300 Metres, SAVVY KINGMAN was left racing wide and without cover. Passing the 400 Metres, GOLD 'N’ BOLD, which had come under pressure, was momentarily crowded for room between SAVVY KINGMAN (B Shinn) which shifted in marginally and LADY FIRST which at this time attempted to shift to the outside of BLAZING BEAT. Apprentice Chau was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, the majority shift in this incident had come from LADY FIRST and therefore he was reprimanded and told to ensure that he does not place too much pressure on other horses and riders to obtain clear running. B Shinn was told to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances. The Stewards considered a protest/objection lodged by Apprentice C L Chau, the rider of LADY FIRST, which finished 3rd, against SAVVY KINGMAN, which finished 2nd, alleging interference to his mount passing the 300 Metres. After taking evidence from Apprentice Chau and Jockey Shinn and after viewing the official videos, the Stewards found that just prior to the 300 Metres LADY FIRST shifted out with a view to improving between BLAZING BEAT and SAVVY KINGMAN which then got its head on the side and lay in. The Stewards formed the view that although LADY FIRST had shifted away from the rail, it had not properly established running between BLAZING BEAT and SAVVY KINGMAN which resulted in LADY FIRST being disappointed for running between those horses. The Stewards further found that irrespective of this incident at the 300 Metres, LADY FIRST had improved its position to be almost level with SAVVY KINGMAN passing the 75 Metres, but was unable to establish a margin over that horse over the final 75 Metres. Having considered all the circumstances of this incident, the Stewards overruled the protest/objection and declared weighed-in on the numbers notified by the Judge. At a subsequent inquiry, B Shinn was reprimanded and told that although LADY FIRST had not established running outside BLAZING BEAT at this time, nonetheless he must ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. The performance of COSMO CLASSIC, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, COSMO CLASSIC will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of COSMO CLASSIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, Z Purton stated that inside the 100 Metres OWNERS’ STAR commenced to shorten stride and did not feel comfortable in its action over the concluding stages and on pulling up. A veterinary inspection of OWNERS’ STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, OWNERS’ STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of LUCKY MISSILE and SMILING FACE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. NUNCHUKS and SAVVY KINGMAN were sent for sampling.

UNIVERSAL GO GO (M F Poon) shifted in at the start and bumped MISSION SMART. In this incident, M F Poon lost the use of his right stirrup iron which he was able to regather near the 1150 Metres. From wide barriers, LUCKY PUZZLE and SUNNY BABY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages to obtain cover. After initially being ridden along from a wide barrier in the early stages, WOOD ON FIRE was steadied making the turn near the 1000 Metres to obtain cover. Passing the 700 Metres, MERCURIAL commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GALLANT LEGACY. After the 400 Metres, SUNNY BABY was awkwardly placed behind LUCKY PUZZLE when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running. After the 300 Metres, GALLANT LEGACY was awkwardly placed behind YOUNG VICTORY. Approaching the 250 Metres, MISSION SMART was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SHADOW RUNNER when being directed to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running. Close to the finishing line, UNIVERSAL GO GO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MERCURIAL and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race. For the majority of the race, FOCUS travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. When questioned, Apprentice C L Chau stated that, consistent with its most recent start, he was instructed to lead on MERCURIAL tonight if circumstances permitted. He said on jumping MERCURIAL began very awkwardly which resulted in him becoming badly unbalanced. He said he then rode his mount along for some distance in an endeavour to obtain a forward position, however, MERCURIAL was not able to show sufficient early speed to improve its position between horses and therefore after the 1100 Metres he elected to shift MERCURIAL across and obtain cover behind YOUNG VICTORY. He added he was of the opinion that to continue to ride his mount along in an endeavour to comply with his instructions would have resulted in MERCURIAL having to do too much work and would likely then not be able to finish off the race. On return to Sha Tin, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that LUCKY PUZZLE was found to be bleeding from the right nostril. An endoscopic examination conducted on LUCKY PUZZLE confirmed that horse to have bled. A veterinary inspection of GALLANT LEGACY and YOUNG VICTORY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. MERCURIAL, WOOD ON FIRE and MISSION SMART were sent for sampling.

BULLISH GLORY was slow to begin. CALIFORNIA LEVEE and SMART COUSIN bumped at the start. DIVINE UNICORN shifted out at the start and bumped RED ELYSEES. After this, DIVINE UNICORN was shifted across behind runners from a wide barrier. From a wide barrier, PERFECT TO PLAY got its head up in the early stages when being steadied to obtain cover. After initially being ridden along, METHANE was steadied shortly after the start to obtain cover. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, CALIFORNIA LEVEE and BRIGHT VISION brushed. Near the 1300 Metres, CALIFORNIA LEVEE raced in restricted room inside BRIGHT VISION (R Maia) which shifted in marginally. R Maia was told to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances. Rounding the Home Turn, KUNGFUMASTER PANDA raced tight outside CALIFORNIA LEVEE which shifted out. Near the 175 Metres, RED ELYSEES, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when crowded for room between CALIFORNIA LEVEE and DONC JE SUIS (B Shinn) which shifted out. A veterinary inspection of RED ELYSEES and DIONYSUS COLLIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of DIVINE UNICORN immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. SMART COUSIN, DYNAMIC EAGLE and METHANE were sent for sampling.

ALLEZ and BOND A STAR bumped at the start, resulting in BOND A STAR becoming unbalanced, shifting out and inconveniencing SUPERB DADDY which then shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of STREET SCREAM. SHINING ON began awkwardly and then was bumped by FORTUNE HERO which shifted out. This resulted in SHINING ON bumping HURRY HURRY GAIN. When being steadied from a wide barrier to obtain cover, HAPPY RUBY got its head up on a number of occasions in the early stages. From the outside barrier, RUBY STARS was steadied to obtain cover shortly after the start. BOND A STAR made the turn near the 1000 Metres awkwardly and lay out. After this, BOND A STAR continued to lay out when over-racing. BOND A STAR lay out again making the turn near the 550 Metres. Making the turn after the 1000 Metres, RUBY STARS, which was racing wide, got its head on the side and lay out. Passing the 800 Metres, SHINING ON was awkwardly placed outside the heels of STREET SCREAM which shifted out marginally. When questioned, M F Poon (STREET SCREAM) stated that when ridden conservatively by him from a wide barrier two starts ago, STREET SCREAM had travelled well and finished off the race. He said therefore tonight he was asked from a more favourable barrier not to ride his mount along in the early stages and to obtain a position where the horse was comfortable. He said it was anticipated that this would be in about a midfield position. He said after shifting STREET SCREAM across to race behind BOND A STAR in the early stages, STREET SCREAM did not travel well and was inclined to lay in in the middle stages. He said STREET SCREAM got further out of its ground than he anticipated and therefore after the 900 Metres he commenced to push his mount along in an endeavour to follow BOND A STAR. He said STREET SCREAM did not respond to his riding which resulted in RUBY STARS being able to shift in front of STREET SCREAM after the 700 Metres. He added STREET SCREAM continued to travel only fairly and then when shifted to the outside of runners at the entrance to the Straight lay in which resulted in him changing his whip over into his right hand. He said when he changed his whip over, he dropped his right rein which took him some time to regather during which time STREET SCREAM continued to lay in. Mr D J Hall, trainer of STREET SCREAM, stated that he was disappointed with the manner in which STREET SCREAM finished its most recent start off when the horse was ridden along out of the barriers to obtain a more forward position. He said as he was satisfied with the manner in which the horse finished off the race at a start before its most recent race, he asked Jockey Poon not to ride STREET SCREAM along in the early stages, but he felt that the horse would have sufficient natural early speed to obtain a midfield position. He said he was disappointed that STREET SCREAM got as far out of its ground as it did as he felt that the horse would have been able to obtain about a midfield position. A veterinary inspection of STREET SCREAM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of KING’S TROOPER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. SUPERB DADDY, HURRY HURRY GAIN and SPRINT FORWARD were sent for sampling.

KING OPIE lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and consequently was slow to begin. EXCEPTIONAL NICE shifted in at the start and bumped VILLA FIONN which became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped HARDLY SWEARS. After this, HARDLY SWEARS and VILLA FIONN were steadied to obtain cover. YO BEAUTY began awkwardly. HARMONY SPIRIT shifted in at the start and bumped WEALTHY DELIGHT. Near the 450 Metres, TURIN REDSTAR raced tight outside EXCEPTIONAL NICE which shifted out away from the heels of YO BEAUTY which was commencing to give ground. Approaching the 400 Metres, HARMONY SPIRIT was shifted to the outside of the heels of SMOOTHIES after being awkwardly placed behind that horse. HARMONY SPIRIT then improved quickly to be racing close to the heels of YO BEAUTY which at this time was giving ground abruptly. This resulted in HARMONY SPIRIT (Apprentice C L Chau) having to be severely checked away from the heels of YO BEAUTY and shifted out abruptly to avoid the heels of that horse and in doing so made heavy contact with the hindquarters of EXCEPTIONAL NICE which became extremely unbalanced and HARMONY SPIRIT being checked. In this incident, EXCEPTIONAL NICE lost its right hind plate. Apprentice Chau was advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that HARMONY SPIRIT did improve its position quickly at this time as YO BEAUTY was giving ground abruptly, nonetheless he must be aware of the changing circumstances of a race to ensure that he does not place his mounts and others around him in awkward positions which can result in interference in races. After this, YO BEAUTY continued to give ground and finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of YO BEAUTY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of YO BEAUTY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, YO BEAUTY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. At the entrance to the Straight, ROYAL BOMB was directed out by PARTERRE (A Hamelin). ROYAL BOMB then shifted out away from PARTERRE, resulting in KING OPIE, which was following ROYAL BOMB and improving to the outside of that horse, shifting away from the heels of ROYAL BOMB and causing SMOOTHIES, which was also looking to improve to the outside of KING OPIE, being awkwardly placed behind that horse and being disappointed for running between KING OPIE and TURIN REDSTAR approaching the 250 Metres. A Hamelin was reprimanded and told to ensure that he exercises more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Passing the 100 Metres, TURIN REDSTAR raced tight outside KING OPIE. When questioned, M F Poon stated that it was felt that tonight’s race would not be run at a particularly quick tempo and with the blinkers being added to the gear of TURIN REDSTAR, it was believed that the horse would be able to obtain a forward position as it had previously raced well when ridden close to the lead. He said it was felt that TURIN REDSTAR may be able to obtain a position outside the lead, however, he was told that if the race was run quicker than anticipated, it was available to him to take a trailing position. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode his mount along for some distance in the early stages to cross runners to his inside. He said passing the winning post on the first occasion he was racing outside the hindquarters of the leader and inside EXCEPTIONAL NICE and YO BEAUTY which were being ridden to obtain a forward position. He said passing the 1300 Metres he was aware that the race was being run at a particularly fast tempo and therefore he steadied his mount to allow EXCEPTIONAL NICE and YO BEAUTY to improve forward of TURIN REDSTAR rather than continue to try and maintain its position outside PARTERRE. When questioned, K Teetan (SMOOTHIES) stated that he was asked to obtain a forward position and lead if possible. He said however that if other runners were intent on leading, it was acceptable for him to take a trailing position. He said on arrival at the Start he gave SMOOTHIES a good warm up to ensure the horse began well. He said after beginning well, he rode SMOOTHIES along in the early stages, however, the horse did not show as much early speed as anticipated. He said runners drawn outside SMOOTHIES were showing more early speed than his mount and he felt that he would have had to ride SMOOTHIES vigorously in an attempt to lead. He said therefore he elected to allow runners drawn wide to improve forward of SMOOTHIES which resulted in his mount travelling further back in the field than had been anticipated. A veterinary inspection of HARMONY SPIRIT and EXCEPTIONAL NICE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. WEALTHY DELIGHT and ROYAL BOMB were sent for sampling.

JAZZ STEED and WIND N GRASS brushed at the start. WIND N GRASS then shifted out, resulting in ROYAL AGILITY racing tight inside MOST WELCOME. SUNSHINE SUPREME shifted out at the start and bumped WINSTON’S LAD. JOYFUL UNION and SUNNY LAD bumped on jumping. Then from wide barriers, JOYFUL UNION and SUNNY LAD were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. After the 900 Metres, SUNSHINE SUPREME was left racing wide and without cover. After the 500 Metres, TRIPLE TRIPLE got its head on the side and shifted out away from INNER FLAME. EXCELLENT CHARIOT, which had been racing behind TRIPLE TRIPLE, improved to be racing inside the heels of that horse. EXCELLENT CHARIOT then got its head on the side and lay in away from TRIPLE TRIPLE, resulting in MOST WELCOME, which was also inclined to lay in, being crowded for room passing the 400 Metres. JAZZ STEED, which was following MOST WELCOME, was steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence and shifted out, resulting in JOYFUL UNION racing tight inside WINSTON’S LAD. The Stewards were of the opinion that there was no carelessness exhibited by any rider in this incident and accordingly no further action was taken. After the race, M F Poon stated that he was instructed to attempt to obtain a midfield position on TRIPLE TRIPLE from the outside barrier. He said after allowing his mount to begin positively, he commenced to shift TRIPLE TRIPLE across to obtain a position closer to the rail in the early stages, however, TRIPLE TRIPLE commenced to travel keenly after the 1100 Metres and he was unable to steady his mount sufficiently to obtain a trailing position behind runners. He said this resulted in TRIPLE TRIPLE having to race outside the lead and then not finishing off the race in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of TRIPLE TRIPLE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of INNER FLAME and SUNNY LAD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. WIND N GRASS and JAZZ STEED were sent for sampling.

The performance of HEAVENLY THOUGHT, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HEAVENLY THOUGHT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Near the 500 Metres, GIFT OF LIFELINE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUNNY STAR. Rounding the Home Turn, PIANO SOLO was held up for clear running behind SUNNY STAR. Approaching the 200 Metres, SUNNY STAR and SAVAQUIN raced tight. Then near the 150 Metres, SUNNY STAR raced in restricted room between SURREALISM and SAVAQUIN. Passing the 150 Metres, PIANO SOLO was shifted out away from the heels of NOTHING NEW. PIANO SOLO then had difficulty obtaining clear running and was shifted out further behind SURREALISM and then SUNNY STAR to obtain clear running passing the 50 Metres. When questioned, H T Mo stated that he was instructed to ride TOTAL POWER positively in the early stages and obtain a forward position and then to steady his mount to allow runners to improve around TOTAL POWER and to ultimately obtain a position with cover behind the speed. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode TOTAL POWER along in the early stages and approaching the winning post on the first occasion he cleared runners to his inside to race on the rail. He said he then steadied TOTAL POWER with a view to allowing either FARSHAD or HEAVENLY THOUGHT to improve around his mount, however, when those horses did not continue forward, this resulted in TOTAL POWER travelling keenly and leading which had not been the intention. FARSHAD and SAVAQUIN were sent for sampling.
