ONE STEP AHEAD jumped only fairly. On jumping EASY LIFE was checked when crowded for room between ENCORE and BEAUTY NOVA which was also hampered when taken out by QUORUM. SPICY SKEWER jumped awkwardly, brushed the right side of the barrier and shortly after made contact with ENCORE. From wide barriers, ERNEST FEELING and ASIAN ONE were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Near the 1000 Metres, ENCORE got its head up and raced keenly when being steadied to obtain cover. Passing the 800 Metres, QUORUM and BEAUTY NOVA made contact due to QUORUM racing tight to the inside of BEAUTY NOVA. As a result, both horses became unbalanced. Rounding the Home Turn, PRINCE OF BON BON was bumped by HUNKY DORY which shifted to the outside of NOIR RIDER to improve. Approaching the 350 Metres, ONE STEP AHEAD was shifted to the inside of CHIRON to continue into clear running. Then near the 250 Metres ONE STEP AHEAD became awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOIR RIDER and was then shifted to that runner’s outside to secure clear running. ONE STEP AHEAD was then disappointed for running between NOIR RIDER and CHIRON near the 200 Metres and over the concluding stages raced tight between CHIRON and HUNKY DORY and could not be fully ridden out to the finish. Approaching the 300 Metres, QUORUM (L Hewitson) improved into a tight run between HUNKY DORY and PRINCE OF BON BON, resulting in QUORUM making contact with PRINCE OF BON BON and taking that runner out onto the hindquarters of SPICY SKEWER which became unbalanced when bumped by PRINCE OF BON BON. In this incident, PRINCE OF BON BON also became unbalanced when buffeted between QUORUM and SPICY SKEWER. L Hewitson was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that there is sufficient racing room when improving into runs in future. Near the 250 Metres, ENCORE was steadied to avoid the heels of SPICY SKEWER and was then shifted to the outside of that runner to continue into clear running. After the race, Z Purton (BEAUTY NOVA) reported that after being hampered at the start he was obliged to ride his mount along in the early stages to hold a midfield positon. He said BEAUTY NOVA did not travel well at any stage of the event, was under pressure making the Home Turn and failed to run on in the Straight and raced in a disappointing manner. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY NOVA immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse’s trachea. The performance of BEAUTY NOVA, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEAUTY NOVA will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SPICY SKEWER raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. EASY LIFE lost its left front plate after the race. A veterinary inspection of ENCORE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. BEAUTY NOVA, ERNEST FEELING and ASIAN ONE were sent for sampling.

BULB DRAGON and THE HULK bumped at the start. PALACE PAL jumped only fairly and then was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. From the outside barriers, STARSHIP EIGHTY and SMART BEAUTY were also shifted across behind runners in the early stages. In the early stages, TURQUOISE ALPHA raced keenly when being steadied in an attempt to obtain cover. Near the 1300 Metres, PERFETTO was steadied away from the heels of GOLD TACK which shifted in. Also near the 1300 Metres, MACH TEN got its head up when being steadied to obtain cover. TURQUOISE ALPHA raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. When questioned regarding his riding of BULB DRAGON (A Hamelin) and in particular the lead established by that runner together with OSCAR GLORY in the early stages, A Hamelin advised that his instructions were to lead on BULB DRAGON, however, if the pace was strong, to endeavour to obtain a position behind the lead. He said after jumping well BULB DRAGON was able to hold a position in the lead and was soon joined by OSCAR GLORY passing the 1400 Metres. He added that near the 1200 Metres when he felt that the pace of the event was quick, he commenced to take hold of his mount to allow OSCAR GLORY to cross and lead, but as he did so Apprentice Y L Chung, the rider of OSCAR GLORY, also restrained his mount which resulted in BULB DRAGON maintaining the lead. He said with BULB DRAGON wearing blinkers today and OSCAR GLORY being positioned directly to his outside, this also contributed to his mount not responding to his efforts to come back and obtain cover behind OSCAR GLORY. When questioned regarding his riding of OSCAR GLORY, Apprentice Y L Chung stated that his instructions were to lead today’s event. He said from a wide barrier after commencing well he positioned OSCAR GLORY outside BULB DRAGON. He added that near the 1200 Metres when he identified that the pace of the event was strong, he elected to restrain OSCAR GLORY and take up a position outside BULB DRAGON, however, OSCAR GLORY raced keenly and did not respond to his efforts to restrain and as a result set a faster tempo than he would have liked. After considering the explanations offered by A Hamelin and Apprentice Chung and taking into account the sectional times of the event which indicated the pace between the 1200 Metres and the 800 Metres was run only slightly quicker than standard, the Stewards advised both riders that they should endeavour, wherever possible, to rate their mounts at a sustainable pace to allow them to finish in the best possible placing in the field. The performance of BULB DRAGON, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BULB DRAGON will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of OSCAR GLORY, BULB DRAGON sand MACH TEN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. PERFETTO and DARCI JOY were sent for sampling.

Before being allowed to race again, PUBLICIST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SURE JOYFUL jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped UNIVERSAL HORIZON. From wide barriers, STRATHPEFFER and GENERAL WINNER were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. BROTHER PEARL was also shifted across behind runners in the early stages from a wide barrier and was inclined to get its head up and raced ungenerously when being steadied. Near the 900 Metres, DRAGON DELIGHT and SURE JOYFUL made contact due to DRAGON DELIGHT being steadied away from the heels of SIXTH GENERATION. After this, SURE JOYFUL raced very wide and without cover. MILLENNIUM FALCON raced very wide and without cover for the majority of the event and passing the 900 Metres was bumped by SURE JOYFUL which shifted out slightly. Over the final 200 Metres, GENERAL WINNER lay in under pressure. Near the 150 Metres, D STAR was steadied to avoid the heels of SIXTH GENERATION which shifted in. After the race, H T Mo (INNO TECH WINNER) explained that it was not his instruction to lead today’s event but after beginning well, his mount held the lead without being unduly pressured in the early stages. A veterinary inspection of MILLENNIUM FALCON immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. SIXTH GENERATION and D STAR were sent for sampling.

He added that due to its wide run and racing manners, CHILLI BABA did not finish the race off as anticipated. A veterinary inspection of CHILLI BABA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CHILLI BABA, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CHILLI BABA will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KA YING STAR raced keenly in the early stages. For a short distance passing the 400 Metres, GLORIOUS DRAGON had difficulty obtaining clear running when held up between SENOR TOBA and RUNNING GLORY. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MONEY CATCHER, S De Sousa stated that MONEY CATCHER jumped awkwardly and then made contact with KA YING STAR. He said MONEY CATCHER obtained the lead and was able to set a moderate pace throughout the early and middle stages. He said from the 800 Metres he endeavoured to quicken the pace, however, MONEY CATCHER raced "flat” today, did not respond to his urgings and was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off in the Straight. Trainer F C Lor stated that he expected MONEY CATCHER to perform well today as it had pleased the stable since its last start win on 11 January 2023. He said, in his opinion, the principal reason for its disappointing performance was that MONEY CATCHER did not appreciate carrying the weight of 132 lbs assigned to it. A veterinary inspection of MONEY CATCHER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MONEY CATCHER, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MONEY CATCHER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SENOR TOBA and RUNNING GLORY were sent for sampling.

SKY FIELD jumped awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with MASTER EIGHT. SKY FIELD was then shifted across behind runners in the early stages. SUPER WEALTHY raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 800 Metres was steadied away from the heels of SIGHT SUCCESS. When questioned regarding his riding of WELLINGTON in the early part of the Straight, A Badel stated that he was given no specific instructions on how to ride the horse. He said after obtaining a position behind LUCKY SWEYNESSE, his mount travelled reasonably well entering the Straight but he was mindful that, in his opinion, WELLINGTON has a short sprint and for this reason he did not want to expose WELLINGTON too early in the Straight. He said as a result he remained racing behind LUCKY SWEYNESSE until near the 250 Metres where he exposed WELLINGTON and placed his mount under full pressure where, in his opinion, the horse finished the race off reasonably well to obtain the second position. After considering his explanation, the Stewards were satisfied that Jockey Badel’s riding today had resulted in WELLINGTON obtaining the best possible place in the field, however, he was advised that, wherever possible, he should place his mounts under full pressure at the appropriate time so as to have no room for query. LUCKY SWEYNESSE and WELLINGTON were sent for sampling.

A veterinary inspection of SAKEWIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. DRAGON’S LUCK and MIGHTY STRIDE were sent for sampling.
