RED ELYSEES was withdrawn on 6.6.23 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (left front tendon injury) and was replaced by first Standby Declared Starter SURE WIN WIN (M F Poon). SMART COUSIN was also withdrawn on 6.6.23 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by second Standby Declared Starter OWNERS’ STAR (M Chadwick). Before being allowed to race again, RED ELYSEES and SMART COUSIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On jumping, DAILY BEAUTY was checked and OWNERS’ STAR, which was slow to be begin, crowded between BARON ZEE which shifted out and CABLE SPEED. CABLE SPEED jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped CLASSIC ARCHI. CIRCUIT ELITE shifted in at the start, briefly crowding SURE WIN WIN. From a wide barrier, CHIRON was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 1400 Metres, CIRCUIT ELITE was briefly crowded by WIN WIN CHARITY which shifted in and away from ALL IS READY. In the middle stages, CABLE SPEED was inclined to over-race. Near the 800 Metres, WIN WIN CHARITY, which was racing keenly, shifted out when positioned behind GOLDEN FAIRY and as a result made contact with CIRCUIT ELITE which became unbalanced when taken wider. After the 600 Metres, CABLE SPEED was steadied when crowded between BARON ZEE and SURE WIN WIN, both of which shifted ground. CHIRON, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of CABLE SPEED and shifted out to avoid the heels of that runner. Near the 500 Metres, DREAM CATCHER, which was commencing to give ground, was checked when crowded by GOLDEN FAIRY which, after racing tight to the inside of WIN WIN CHARITY (B Avdulla), shifted in and away from that runner. B Avdulla was advised to exercise care. Approaching the 100 Metres, OWNERS’ STAR endeavoured to improve into a narrow run between CLASSIC ARCHI and BARON ZEE and in doing so made contact with BARON ZEE. OWNERS’ STAR was then held up behind CLASSIC ARCHI when disappointed for this run over the concluding stages. Also over the concluding stages, BARON ZEE was obliged to be corrected by its rider, Apprentice Y L Chung, when shifting in towards OWNERS’ STAR and as a result was unable to be fully ridden out to the finish of the race. CIRCUIT ELITE lost its left front plate after the race. The performance of DREAM CATCHER, which finished tailed out on the second occasion in its recent starts, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DREAM CATCHER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a series of consecutive barrier trials and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of DREAM CATCHER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, M Dee (CABLE SPEED) reported that his intention was to hold a more forward position but after being hampered at the start his mount failed to show sufficient pace to do so. Also after the race, B Avdulla (WIN WIN CHARITY) reported that his mount hung in throughout the event and gave ground when placed under pressure in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of WIN WIN CHARITY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Following the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on SURE WIN WIN at the request of Trainer T P Yung. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse’s trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SURE WIN WIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of CHIRON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. CIRCUIT ELITE and CLASSIC ARCHI were sent for sampling.

THETA HEDGE jumped awkwardly. On jumping, HAPPY GATHERING was crowded for room between SUPER HORNET and FINGERS CROSSED which shifted out. A short distance later, HAPPY GATHERING and SUPER HORNET bumped when SUPER HORNET was racing tight to the inside of THETA HEDGE. DOUBLE SHOW was hampered on jumping when crowded by HEAVENLY THOUGHT which shifted out. HEAVENLY THOUGHT was then shifted across behind runners in the early stages. EUROMISSILE jumped only fairly and raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Making the Home Turn, FINGERS CROSSED was shifted to the outside of HAPPILY FRIENDS when that runner was commencing to give ground and as a result FINGERS CROSSED made contact with EUROMISSILE. Approaching the 200 Metres, SUPER HORNET shifted in and bumped EUROMISSILE, resulting in both runners becoming slightly unbalanced. Also approaching the 200 Metres, HEAVENLY THOUGHT was shifted to the outside of EUROMISSILE and SUPER HORNET to obtain clear running and then near the 100 Metres had some difficulty obtaining a run between SUPER HORNET and JUST GREAT TWO which was inclined to shift in slightly. Near the 150 Metres, HAPPILY FRIENDS was steadied when crowded between FINGERS CROSSED and JACK WIN which shifted out and away from HAPPY GATHERING. After the race, K C Leung (ISLAND SHINE) reported that he had some concern with his mount’s action in the Straight and when not in a competitive position desisted from riding it out to the finish. A veterinary inspection of ISLAND SHINE immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg and also a "roarer” which had previously been reported. Before being allowed to race again, ISLAND SHINE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of CIRCUIT SPLENDOR, Trainer T P Yung stated that at its last start CIRCUIT SPLENDOR was unsuited by racing keenly in the early stages. He said tonight from an inside barrier CIRCUIT SPLENDOR settled well, enjoyed a good run in the event and as a consequence was able to improve on its last start performance. A veterinary inspection of HAPPILY FRIENDS immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPILY FRIENDS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FINGERS CROSSED, CIRCUIT SPLENDOR and HAPPY GATHERING were sent for sampling.

07/06/2023  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1650m   Going: GOOD  (2.73)   Rating: 060-040

GLUCK RACER, which was fractious in the barriers, jumped awkwardly and lost ground. BEAU GOSSE jumped only fairly and shortly after the start was crowded by JOYFUL CHAMPION which shifted out and away from FEARLESS FIRE. BEAU GOSSE was then shifted across behind runners in the early stages. COPARTNER ERA and SUNNY DELIGHT bumped at the start. Then from the outside barriers, COPARTNER ERA and SUNNY DELIGHT were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, JOYFUL CHAMPION failed to show sufficient pace to take up a more forward position. Near the 1400 Metres, JOYFUL GENIUS was steadied when crowded between WIN WIN FIGHTER and V CHEVALIERS which was taken out by GLUCK RACER when that runner made the turn awkwardly. In the middle stages, GLUCK RACER and BEAU GOSSE raced keenly. Near the 400 Metres, JOYFUL CHAMPION was steadied when disappointed for running to the inside of SUNNY DELIGHT when that runner was commencing to give ground. BEAU GOSSE lay out making the Home Turn. When questioned regarding his riding of M UNICORN and the reason he commenced a forward move near the 1000 Metres, K Teetan stated that his instructions were to take up a forward position and lead if the pace of the event was slow. He added that he was also given the option that should the pace steady in the middle stages, he could make a forward move. He said in the early stages when positioned behind GANG OF BROTHERS, he felt the pace was genuine and for this reason he held a position with cover behind that runner. He said near the 1000 Metres he felt the pace slowed and having regard to his instructions he elected to ride his mount forward to endeavour to lead. He added that as he commenced a forward move, the leaders quickened which resulted in him having to make more use of M UNICORN than what he had anticipated and as a result M UNICORN was left without a finishing effort. Trainer C Fownes confirmed the instructions issued and whilst he conceded that M UNICORN was unsuited by making a forward move in the Back Straight, he confirmed that such tactic was open to Jockey Teetan having regard to the instructions issued and taking into account the sectional times of the event which confirmed the pace between the 1200 Metres and the 800 Metres was run slower than standard time. After considering his explanations, the Stewards found the tactics adopted by K Teetan were reasonable in the circumstances. A veterinary inspection of M UNICORN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of GANG OF BROTHERS and JOYFUL CHAMPION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of SUNNY DELIGHT immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils. M UNICORN, GALLANT CROWN and BEAU GOSSE were sent for sampling.

RED DESERT, which was following MELBOURNE HALL and also was inclined to race keenly, was steadied as a consequence. In the middle stages, PRECISION GOAL raced keenly. After being loaded into the barriers, HAPPY HUNK became fractious, reared and struck its head on the superstructure. HAPPY HUNK was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, HAPPY HUNK was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY HUNK will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LEAN HERO and SHARPEN BRIGHT bumped at the start. READY PLAYER ONE shifted in on jumping and bumped AMAZING BOY. RIGHT HONOURABLE jumped only fairly. Near the 1300 Metres, NICE BIRDIE and SINGAPORE SPIRIT bumped due to both runners shifting ground. From the 350 Metres until near the 150 Metres, UNITED ENDEAVORS was held up for clear running behind MASTER TORNADO. Approaching the 200 Metres, BEAUTY MISSION endeavoured to obtain a narrow run between SINGAPORE SPIRIT and READY PLAYER ONE. When READY PLAYER ONE and SINGAPORE SPIRIT then shifted ground near the 150 Metres, BEAUTY MISSION became held up for clear running and near the 100 Metres was checked when disappointed for this run. As a result, BEAUTY MISSION could not be fully tested to the finish of the event. Approaching the 150 Metres, LEAN HERO was directed to the outside of NICE BIRDIE to obtain clear running and in doing so bumped BIG TWO. When questioned, B Avdulla (SHARPEN BRIGHT) stated that his mount, which was having its second race start, was inclined to race greenly throughout the event. He said making the Home Turn he became held up behind UNITED ENDEAVORS and on straightening attempted to shift to the outside of that runner to improve. He added that when LEAN HERO shifted in to take advantage of that run, he continued to be held up behind UNITED ENDEAVORS for a short distance on straightening. He said after the 300 Metres he was able to commence to ride SHARPEN BRIGHT along for a short distance, but near the 250 Metres was obliged to steady when UNITED ENDEAVORS shifted in slightly at that point. He further stated that over the final 250 Metres SHARPEN BRIGHT was not afforded completely clear running and as a result he was not able to fully test his mount in the Straight. After the race, L Hewitson (BIG TWO) reported that he was disappointed with the manner in which his mount finished the race off. A veterinary inspection of BIG TWO immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse’s trachea. Before being allowed to race again, BIG TWO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Also after the race, LEAN HERO was noted to have sustained a minor abrasion to the left front leg. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY MISSION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. LEAN HERO and UNITED ENDEAVORS were sent for sampling.

After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that HARMONY FIRE had bled from both nostrils.
