When the gates opened, MR FLOODLIGHT bounded in the air, then lost further ground after being bumped by SPY KING which began awkwardly and shifted out. FASTER FASTER was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SO NICE was bumped by TELECOM EMPEROR which shifted in. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, FASTER FASTER was steadied away from the heels of TOP SPEED. At the 700 Metres, SPY KING was steadied away from the heels of TOP SPEED which shifted out momentarily. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, TOP SPEED was held up and unable to improve. Throughout the race, SUPER RED travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the poor performance of NEWSWIRE TOO, Z Purton was not able to offer any explanation. He said NEWSWIRE TOO travelled comfortably in the run, however, disappointed him by failing to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the Straight. He said because of the manner in which NEWSWIRE TOO failed to close the race off, he did not persevere in riding his mount out to the end of the race. NEWSWIRE TOO was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of NEWSWIRE TOO after the race did not show any significant findings. FAST WINNER and MR FLOODLIGHT were sent for sampling.
