REAL SPECIAL began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped YOUNG ELITE. GEM OF CHIU TON began awkwardly. Making the turn at the 800 Meters, GEM OF CHIU TON, which was racing wide and without cover, was allowed to stride forward. Shortly after straightening, SPECIAL DRAGON was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running. In the Straight, YOUNG ELITE hung in. The performance of TOM’S SIX, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, TOM’S SIX will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. B Doyle (GEM OF CHIU TON) explained after the 300 Metres his mount commenced to give ground. He said approaching the 200 Metres GEM OF CHIU TON got its head up and became unbalanced in its action. He said he felt something might have been amiss with GEM OF CHIU TON and therefore he stopped riding his mount. He said a short distance afterwards GEM OF CHIU TON freed up in its action, however, he did not ride the horse out to the end of the race. Trainer Y S Tsui said consideration would now be given to gelding GEM OF CHIU TON in an endeavour to have the horse race truly. Having in mind the previous record of GEM OF CHIU TON, the Stewards advised Mr Tsui the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in a series of official barrier trials before being permitted to race again. Mr Tsui was told should GEM OF CHIU TON perform similarly in the future, consideration would be given to making a recommendation to the Board of Stewards that the horse be compulsorily retired. In addition, Mr Tsui was also told until advised otherwise the Stewards will not permit GEM OF CHIU TON to be ridden in races by an apprentice jockey. GEM OF CHIU TON and HOME TREASURE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GEM OF CHIU TON and HOME TREASURE after the race did not show any significant findings. YOUNG ELITE and DANESIS were sent for sampling.
