When the gates opened, HOLIDAY SUN, which had been fractious in its stall, lifted its front feet off the ground and as a consequence was slow to begin. After the 1000 Metres, SOMETHING SPECIAL got its head up when awkwardly placed outside the heels of HOLIDAY SUN which shifted out slightly while being steadied away from the heels of DASHING THUNDER. At the 900 Metres, SOMETHING SPECIAL was steadied away from the heels of WIND KNIGHT. When questioned regarding the poor performance of MARBLE RED, W C Marwing said his intention had been to ride the horse either in the lead or alternatively in a forward position. He said at no stage of tonight’s race did MARBLE RED travel well and he rode along in the early stages to obtain a forward position. He said making the first turn he elected to steady MARBLE RED and obtained a position slightly forward of midfield as the horse was not travelling well enough to go forward and take up the running. He said when placed under pressure MARBLE RED did not respond to his riding and was very disappointing in the manner in which it closed the race off. He said in his opinion the work of MARBLE RED leading into tonight's race was good and because of this he felt the horse had a strong chance of success. He said after the race MARBLE RED felt a little short in its action. MARBLE RED was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MARBLE RED after the race did not show any significant findings. O’REILLY MAGIC and ABLE DRAGON were sent for sampling.
