Despite being ridden along, GANBARIA failed to muster pace. Shortly after entering the Back Straight, WIN-A-LOT was steadied away from the heels of SUPER SURVEYS when crowded for room inside JOLLY BIRD which shifted ground when proving difficult to settle. JOLLY BIRD continued to prove difficult to settle for some distance thereafter and passing the 600 Metres was checked away from the heels of KINGSTON MARBLE. When questioned, Y T Cheng (MASSIVE STAR) stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a midfield position with cover. He said accordingly after MASSIVE STAR began well, he attempted to steady the horse into a position about midfield, however, he was unable to obtain this position and consequently raced wide and without cover throughout. Mr C H Yip, trainer of MASSIVE STAR, confirmed that it was intended MASSIVE STAR would be ridden in a position about midfield. He said he was of the belief that horses drawn to the inside of MASSIVE STAR would show sufficient pace that the horse would be able to obtain cover behind those horses. When questioned, B Prebble stated that the intention had been to obtain a forward position on SUPER SURVEYS, however, after his mount began awkwardly, he felt that the horse would not show sufficient pace to clear horses drawn to his inside, therefore he elected to steady SUPER SURVEYS and obtained a position with cover towards the rear of the field. TAI HANG’S PRIDE, STEEL NERVES and SINGLE MALT were sent for sampling.
