At declaration time, W M Lai was declared as the rider of both LUCKY TYCOON and EAST RIDER. It was established that W M Lai had a firm commitment to ride LUCKY TYCOON. As such, the Stewards permitted Apprentice T H So to be substituted as the rider of EAST RIDER. For this declaration error, W M Lai was fined $2,000. MOONGLOW began awkwardly and was then crowded for room between NAMJONG HUNTER and TREMENDOUS PLUS which shifted out. PENGLAI XIANZI and ACCELERATOR were slow to begin. About the 900 Metres, FLY ME TO THE MOON was steadied away from the heels of GOLD CITY (J Winks) which shifted in when barely clear. J Winks was advised to ensure that he is sufficiently clear of other runners prior to shifting ground. WESTERN STAR, which was racing to the inside of FLY ME TO THE MOON, was briefly crowded a short distance later. Near the 150 Metres, FLY ME TO THE MOON and TREMENDOUS PLUS bumped when crowded for room between NAMJONG HUNTER which shifted out slightly and PENGLAI XIANZI which shifted in. Close to the finishing line, EAST RIDER was steadied away from the heels of TREMENDOUS PLUS. As a result, EAST RIDER was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Throughout the race, GREAT SHOW travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of GOLD CITY after the race did not show any significant findings. FLY ME TO THE MOON, PENGLAI XIANZI and TREMENDOUS PLUS were sent for sampling.
