JACOBEE began awkwardly and then proved difficult to settle in the early stages. MAJESTIC HEART began awkwardly, resulting in its rider, becoming unbalanced in the saddle. Approaching the 1600 Metres, MINGS` HERO was steadied away from the heels of JACOBEE which at this time was taken in by ATHENIUM. Passing the 300 Metres, ARION OF CHIU TON got its head on the side and shifted out under pressure. Throughout the race, HANNAH KING PRAWN travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the performance of ATHENIUM, O Doleuze stated that his mount travelled satisfactorily until the 600 Metres at which time he was required to use the whip on ATHENIUM to have it make ground. He said ATHENIUM quickened in the early part of the Straight, however, came under pressure near the 300 Metres and then was disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding. He added that although he had his whip knocked from his hand by the whip of B Prebble (MAJESTIC HEART) approaching the 200 Metres, this was of little consequence. Trainer S Woods said that ATHENIUM had pleased him in its track work since its last start success and a forward showing was expected today. He added the only reason he could offer for the horse`s disappointing performance was that it was second up today after an enforced lay-off. He advised the Stewards that it is now his intention to spell ATHENIUM. A veterinary inspection of ATHENIUM after the race did not show any significant findings. ATHENIUM, JACOBEE and MAJESTIC HEART were sent for sampling.
