From a wide draw, MERRY WAY was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, GRAND STORE failed to muster speed and consequently raced back in the field and throughout the race travelled wide and without cover. Passing the 800 Metres, KING OF HEARTS proved very difficult to settle and shifted out when being checked away from the heels of GOOD LOOKING WATCH. When KING OF HEARTS shifted out, GRAND STORE and BULLISH WIN were taken wider. For some distance after this, KING OF HEARTS continued to prove difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD LOOKING WATCH. Approaching the 200 Metres, MERRY WAY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD LOOKING WATCH. Near the 200 Metres, J Lloyd (KING OF HEARTS) dropped his whip. M Chadwick was fined the sum of $5,000 for using his whip to excess on BULLISH WIN in the Straight when that horse was clearly out of contention. AMEDEO, ST DIDAR and FLYING CHINA were sent for sampling.
