On arrival at the Start, it was note that MUSTANG had lost its right front plate. After having this plate refitted, MUSTANG was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said, in his opinion, it was suitable to race. THE KID and GREAT FANTASY were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SIMPLY JOY and ACTUARIAL TALENT were crowded for room between KIMBER FORTUNE which shifted in and TOP SPEED which shifted out after being bumped by FASCINATING SMILE. From the outside barrier, MUSTANG was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. At the 600 Metres, BLESS US ALL, which got its head on the side and was laying out, was bumped by LUCKY NISTELROOY which shifted out away from the fence. SCOOT DA LOOT, which was following, was also close to the heels of LUCKY NISTELROOY. Then rounding the Home Turn, BLESS US ALL, which continued to have its head on the side, was taken wider by LUCKY NISTELROOY which shifted out to obtain clear running. MUSTANG was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight. Passing the 150 Metres, FASCINATING SMILE was momentarily eased away from the heels of MUSTANG which shifted in. Throughout the race, RAISING SUN travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of RAISING SUN after the race revealed that the horse had bled from both nostrils. RAISING SUN, HOT PEPPER and MUSTANG were sent for sampling.
