W M Lai was dislodged from MASTER DREAMER on the way to the barriers. MASTER DREAMER proceeded to the 1800 Metre chute riderless. MASTER DREAMER was returned to the Start and was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. LIONS’ FORTUNE began awkwardly and got its head up on a number of occasions. GENERAL DANROAD was slow to begin. From wide barriers, BIG WINNER AGAIN and PEPPERMINT were taken across behind runners shortly after the start. At the 400 Metres, EXCELLENT WIN, which was commencing to give ground, was crowded for room between SCENT OF OSMANTHUS which got its head up and shifted in and QUANTUM POWER which, after shifting to the outside of LUCKY CHEVALIER into a tight run between that horse and EXCELLENT WIN, was taken out slightly by LUCKY CHEVALIER. No further action was taken. At the entrance to the Straight, PEPPERMINT was steadied away from the heels of MAN OF THE MATCH which shifted out to obtain clear running. Approaching the 300 Metres, SUPER THUNDER was steadied when racing tight between BUDDY BUDDIES and MASTER DREAMER. After the 200 Metres, PEPPERMINT was shifted to the inside of LIONS’ FORTUNE to continue improving. Over the concluding stage, SCENT OF OSMANTHUS was bumped and taken wider by SUPER GENKI which shifted out. For the majority of the Straight, LIONS’ FORTUNE got its head on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride. In the Straight, LUCKY CHEVALIER got its head on the side and lay out under pressure. Throughout the race, MASTER DREAMER travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BUDDY BUDDIES, B Prebble stated that his mount travelled satisfactorily until the entrance to the Straight. He said rounding the Home Turn he was able to shift BUDDY BUDDIES into clear running, however, the horse did not lengthen stride and was most disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding. A veterinary inspection of MAN OF THE MATCH and BUDDY BUDDIES after the race did not show any significant findings. QUANTUM POWER and SUPER GENKI were sent for sampling.
