CHANTILLY, which was leaning on the inside of its barrier, was hampered shortly after the start after being bumped by GREAT SHOW which shifted out. TELECOM CHARGER was slow to begin and shortly after the start was steadied away from the heels of O’REILLY MAGIC which shifted in after being bumped by KOENIGSBERG. HONG KONG FAT began awkwardly and then travelled wide and without cover until at the 800 Metres. Shortly after entering the Straight, GORGEOUS RULER was bumped by SABINA which was taken out by HONG KONG FAT which shifted ground to obtain clear running. MASTER DREAMER was not able to obtain clear running until passing the 200 Metres and then over the concluding stages was steadied away from the heels of HONG KONG FAT which was directed in by SABINA. Because of this, MASTER DREAMER was not able to be ridden out to the end of the race. When questioned, T H So (GORGEOUS RULER) stated that passing the winning post on the first occasion he was following KOENIGSBERG. He said at this time, in his opinion, the tempo of the race was genuine. He said approaching the 1200 Metres he urged his mount to maintain the position behind KOENIGSBERG, however, a margin developed between KOENIGSBERG and his mount. He said as he felt that the tempo of the race at this time was satisfactory, he was reluctant to ride his mount along to make up the ground behind KOENIGSBERG as he did not believe that GORGEOUS RULER would then be able to finish off the race if use had to be made of it at this time of the race. He said for this reason HONG KONG FAT was able to shift in and obtain the position behind KOENIGSBERG and in advance of GORGEOUS RULER. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that KOENIGSBERG had sustained a superficial wound to the inside of the left hind heel. A veterinary inspection of MR SPEEDY after the race did not show any significant findings. SABINA, ROCKET AND GOLD and GORGEOUS RULER were sent for sampling.
