Steward Report Predict Pace Map
Whilst parading behind the barriers, GRAND HARBOUR became fractious and then after being loaded into the barriers reared. Before being allowed to race again, GRAND HARBOUR will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. QUANTUM POWER began awkwardly. SKIP COURT was crowded for room at the start between COLLAGEN which shifted in and FLUKE which shifted out after bumping BORN TO WIN. Passing the 1200 Metres, SPLENDID VICTORY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of JOLLY POSH. Making the turn after the 900 Metres, GRAND HARBOUR commenced to prove very difficult to settle and shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of JOLLY POSH. Passing the 800 Metres, SPLENDID VICTORY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of APOLLO CAVALIER. BORN TO WIN was unable to obtain clear running over about the final 250 Metres and because of this was not able to be properly tested. Passing the 50 Metres, SKIP COURT was shifted out away from the heels of GOOD HONG KONG which in the Straight got its head on the side and lay in under pressure. When questioned, K C Leung stated that in the run to the first turn QUANTUM POWER came off the bridle and he had to ride it along to maintain the position behind COLLAGEN. He said approaching the 800 Metres QUANTUM POWER commenced to travel on the bit and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of COLLAGEN. He said he was obliged to shift out away from the heels of that horse as QUANTUM POWER had previously been reluctant to race and was then proving difficult to settle. He said because of this QUANTUM POWER was left racing in a three wide position without cover and was then taken into a four wide position when COLLAGEN shifted out away from the heels of GRAND HARBOUR. K C Leung was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, he must, wherever circumstances permit, make every endeavour to avoid covering unnecessary ground. When questioned, H W Lai stated that he was instructed to take WINE LOVERS across behind runners in the early stages from barrier 11, however, his mount initially got its head up on a number of occasions when proving difficult to settle. He said after the 1300 Metres he was left racing outside GOOD HONG KONG in a four wide position and he elected to steady WINE LOVERS and shift in across GOOD HONG KONG. He said he immediately rode his mount along to improve his position to be racing behind FLUKE, however, WINE LOVERS did not travel well and he had to ride the horse along vigorously in the middle stages in order to maintain its position behind FLUKE. He said as WINE LOVERS was not travelling well, he slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip on a number of occasions after the 700 Metres to have it travel better. He added he again rode the horse vigorously rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight and WINE LOVERS initially did not respond to his riding. He said however that over the final 200 Metres WINE LOVERS commenced to make some ground and after the 50 Metres had to be checked away from the heels of SPLENDID VICTORY and because of this was not able to be ridden all the way to the end of the race. Trainer K L Man stated that on a request from the owners he instructed Jockey Lai to shift WINE LOVERS across behind runners in the early stages. He said the owners of the horse were concerned that from barrier 11 too much use would have to be made of the horse in the early stages to clear runners to its inside and the horse would then not be able to finish off the race. Mr Man stated that he anticipated that WINE LOVERS would be ridden quietly from wide draws in the future. The Stewards advised Mr Man that the matter would be reported and that they would monitor the manner in which WINE LOVERS will be ridden in the future. GERONIMO MEADOW and GOOD HONG KONG were sent for sampling.
