Approaching the 500 Metres, CHARITY SPIRIT got its head on the side and shifted out towards the hindquarters of CHARITY JOY. Near the 250 Metres, FIONN’S TREASURE and TOUR DE FORCE made contact as FIONN’S TREASURE shifted out to obtain clear running. Passing the 200 Metres, TOUR DE FORCE (M Demuro) shifted in and bumped FIONN’S TREASURE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced and FIONN’S TREASURE being awkwardly placed outside the heels of CHARITY JOY which was giving ground. M Demuro was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to keep his mounts straight. Then passing the 100 Metres, FIONN’S TREASURE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TOUR DE FORCE which shifted in. In this incident, FIONN’S TREASURE was struck across the nose by the whip of M Demuro. Approaching the winning post, BEAUTY SPARKLE baulked at a shadow on the track and shifted out abruptly and consequently was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHARITY SPIRIT. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHARITY JOY, J Moreira stated that CHARITY JOY was slow to begin and because of this he was then obliged to ride his mount along in the early stages to obtain a forward position as instructed. He said after the 700 Metres he was able to shift across to race in the one-off position outside CHARITY SPIRIT which was racing behind the leader BEAUTY SPARKLE. He said he placed CHARITY JOY under pressure near the 500 Metres and immediately became concerned with the manner in which CHARITY JOY was travelling as it did not quicken as he expected it would. He added he placed the horse under heavy pressure rounding the Home Turn, however, CHARITY JOY still did not respond to his riding and stayed on only one-paced until approaching the 100 Metres after which point it then gave ground. Trainer C S Shum said he believed the disappointing performance could be attributed to the manner in which CHARITY JOY jumped and then had to be used up in the early stages to obtain a position close to the speed. He said CHARITY JOY is a young horse and as this was only its second start in Class 2, he believed it may not be seasoned enough to overcome any adverse incidents in its races. A veterinary inspection of CHARITY JOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. CHARITY JOY, CHARITY SPIRIT and BEAUTY SPARKLE were sent for sampling.
