WINNER’S WAY began awkwardly and then despite being ridden along failed to muster speed. SICHUAN DAR and WHAT ELSE BUT YOU bumped at the start. Approaching the 1200 Metres, when being shifted in to race behind WHAT ELSE BUT YOU, WINNER’S WAY commenced to prove very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of WHAT ELSE BUT YOU which was being steadied in an attempt to obtain cover behind RACING SUPERNOVA. When WINNER’S WAY was checked, that horse shifted in abruptly, resulting in SICHUAN DAR being checked and losing ground. DUNDONNELL got its head on the side and lay out making the Home Turn. Throughout the race, WHAT ELSE BUT YOU travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, B Prebble stated that he was under no specific instructions on how NOT LISTENIN’TOME should be ridden today. He said he was asked to obtain a forward position if NOT LISTENIN’TOME was able to do so without having to have pressure placed upon it, however, in the unlikely event that this occurred, he should try and obtain cover. He said, from the wide barrier, NOT LISTENIN’TOME did not show any natural early speed and he believed he would have had to ride the horse aggressively to obtain a forward position and he was reluctant to do this with the horse carrying 132 lbs. He said he was able to obtain a good trailing position behind the eventual winner WHAT ELSE BUT YOU in the middle stages and NOT LISTENIN’TOME initially travelled well. He added however that the horse came under heavy pressure rounding the Home Turn and did not quicken. He said he was not able to offer any explanation for the manner in which NOT LISTENIN’TOME gave ground in the Straight as the horse felt sound in its action and he could detect no breathing issues. A veterinary inspection of NOT LISTENIN’TOME immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of JOLLY BANNER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. WHAT ELSE BUT YOU and ROMANTIC TOUCH were sent for sampling. <30/4/2018 Additional Veterinary Report>The Clinical Veterinary Surgeon reported that WINNER’S WAY was lame in its right front leg with a swollen right front cannon on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, WINNER’S WAY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
