MAGIC SUPREME began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. WHISKEY NEAT and INTERSTELLAR both began awkwardly and bumped at the start. From wide barriers, EVEN KEEL, COOL TEAM and INTERSTELLAR were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages. On several occasions after the 1000 Metres, MAGIC SUPREME got its head up and raced ungenerously. CALIFORNIA ARGENT raced wide and without cover from the 800 Metres. COOL TEAM was held up for a short distance prior to the 300 Metres before being directed out across the heels of WHISKEY NEAT to obtain a run. COOL TEAM then momentarily raced tight between WHISKEY NEAT and CALIFORNIA ARGENT. After the race, G van Niekerk stated that after being ridden more patiently today, ISLAND SHINE travelled well through the early and middle stages in a three wide position but with cover. He said the horse tended to look around when placed under pressure in the Straight and was disappointing in the manner in which it closed off the race. A veterinary inspection of ISLAND SHINE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. COMPUTER PATCH and BEAUTY APPLAUSE were sent for sampling.
