SUN OF MAKFI undertook its required barrier trial on 21 January 2020 carrying a hood and accordingly is required to race with that gear. Trainer D J Hall was fined the sum of $2,000 for failing to submit a gear change adding the hood to the gear carried by SUN OF MAKFI, a standby declared runner in this race, by the required time. BULLISH BROTHER shifted in at the start and bumped YEE CHEONG PEGASUS which lost ground. From the outside barriers, WINS ALL and KANBEKI MOLLY were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. Making the first turn after the 1000 Metres, BULLISH BROTHER was taken out marginally by FANTASTIC FABIO which made the turn awkwardly. COMPASSION STAR (Apprentice C Wong), which was following BULLISH BROTHER, improved to be racing inside the heels of that horse where there was insufficient room, resulting in COMPASSION STAR shifting in and racing very tight between BULLISH BROTHER and ANONYMA which was severely hampered until COMPASSION STAR was checked out across the heels of BULLISH BROTHER approaching the 800 Metres. When COMPASSION STAR was being checked out across the heels of BULLISH BROTHER, GOOD SHOT, which was following, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse in consequence. Apprentice Wong was advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that BULLISH BROTHER had been taken out slightly by FANTASTIC FABIO which had created some room to the inside of that horse and that COMPASSION STAR had commenced to travel keenly when this happened, nonetheless he was severely reprimanded and told that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have made a greater effort than he did on this occasion to prevent his mount from shifting to the inside of BULLISH BROTHER which caused unnecessary crowding to ANONYMA and for COMPASSION STAR to be checked. He was also told that as an apprentice jockey who had ridden in a significant number of races both in Hong Kong and overseas, he would be expected to exercise greater judgement, thereby ensuring that his mounts do not become placed in awkward positions and causing interference to other runners. Near the 650 Metres, ANONYMA raced tight inside COMPASSION STAR which got its head on the side and lay in before being directed back out to relieve the tightening to ANONYMA. GOOD SHOT, which was following, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of COMPASSION STAR passing the 600 Metres in consequence. Passing the 500 Metres, YEE CHEONG PEGASUS was awkwardly placed behind ANONYMA and GOOD SHOT. Rounding the Home Turn, GOOD SHOT was shifted out away from the heels of COMPASSION STAR to obtain clear running. GOOD SHOT made the Home Turn awkwardly after shifting out away from the heels of COMPASSION STAR to obtain clear running. YEE CHEONG PEGASUS, which was improving to the outside of GOOD SHOT, was taken wider in consequence. Approaching the 100 Metres, ADONIS was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of COMPASSION STAR when racing tight inside GOOD SHOT which shifted in away from YEE CHEONG PEGASUS. A veterinary inspection of GOOD SHOT and FANTASTIC FABIO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. BRIGHT KID and YEE CHEONG PEGASUS were sent for sampling.
