After being placed in the barriers, ODE TO JOY proved very fractious and as the start was effected ODE TO JOY, which was being assisted by a starting gate handler, reared which resulted in the horse losing a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, ODE TO JOY will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
EZRA shifted in at the start and bumped PRECISE EXPRESS.
After the 1400 Metres, ODE TO JOY, which was improving its position, was crowded for room inside PRECISE EXPRESS which, when being shifted across behind SUPER OASIS, then improved inside the heels of that horse. This also resulted in PRECISE EXPRESS being hampered. As the Stewards were of the opinion that PRECISE EXPRESS improving into tight running inside SUPER OASIS at this time had caused the incident, no further action was taken.
Passing the 1200 Metres, PRECISE EXPRESS got its head up when being checked away from the heels of SUPER OASIS which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HAPPY ANGEL. After this, SUPER OASIS got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of HAPPY ANGEL.
After the 800 Metres, PRECISE EXPRESS was shifted to the outside of SUPER OASIS to improve its position.
Passing the 400 Metres, LEADING FORTUNE and HAPPY ANGEL raced tight as LEADING FORTUNE shifted to the outside of PALACE PAL.
Approaching the 250 Metres, PALACE PAL, which was giving ground, was momentarily crowded for room between TURIN REDSTAR and LEADING FORTUNE which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of TOTAL POWER (J Moreira) which shifted in. J Moreira was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
After the 200 Metres, TOTAL POWER commenced to shift out under pressure and near the 150 Metres J Moreira dropped his left rein. When this happened, TOTAL POWER shifted out and brushed PRECISE EXPRESS.
After the race, M F Poon stated that after being able to dictate the tempo of the race, INFINITE POWER was disappointing in that after being challenged for the lead by TOTAL POWER after the 300 Metres, INFINITE POWER immediately came under pressure and then did not finish the race off. A veterinary inspection of INFINITE POWER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LEADING FORTUNE, PRECISE EXPRESS and TOTAL POWER were sent for sampling.
