After arriving at the Start, GENERAL SPEEDEE was noted to be walking awkwardly. GENERAL SPEEDEE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. GEM POWER, MULTI-WIN SPIRIT and SILVERBIRD were slow to begin. In the early stages, DAYLIGHT EXPRESS, which began well, was taken back to a position with cover. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, PLEASURE PLEASURE got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of FRAMES DEPOT. Also approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, DAYLIGHT EXPRESS became unbalanced and shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of GENERAL SPEEDEE which was steadied away from the heels of SPLENDID SAILS. In the middle stages, PLEASURE PLEASURE hung out. DAYLIGHT EXPRESS made the Home Turn awkwardly. At the 250 Metres, GEM POWER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied away from the heels of MAKE A MINT. Throughout the race, MAKE A MINT travelled wide and without cover. E Saint-Martin (DIAGHILEV) said the horse travelled in the lead as intended, however, as HAPPY ASH raced to his outside, the tempo of the race was quicker than he would have wished. He said on straightening when placed under pressure DIAGHILEV did not respond to his riding, gave ground and was disappointing in the manner in which it closed the race off. DIAGHILEV and GENERAL SPEEDEE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DIAGHILEV after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, GENERAL SPEEDEE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. WITHALLMYHEART and MULTI-WIN SPIRIT were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported RAMPANT LION had bled from both nostrils, SPLENDID SAILS had sustained cut wounds to its left hind cannon and DOUBLE FANTASY had lost its right front plate.
