MAGIC TEMPLE began awkwardly. ZEPHYRUS was slow to begin. Making the first turn, JOY TRUMPS was steadied when awkwardly placed inside SOUND OF SILENCE. After the 1000 Metres, SPARKLE was steadied away from the heels of ZEPHYRUS. Near the 100 Metres, CARE FREE MIDAS was awkwardly placed inside CLASSIC REUNION which in the Straight hung in. Throughout the race, ONE TOUCH travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the poor performance of NIGHT HUNTER III, H W Lai explained in his opinion the horse was not suited by the manner in which today’s race was run. He said he endeavoured to improve his position around the field after the 700 Metres and whilst he was able to make ground at that stage, NIGHT HUNTER III failed to continue its run to the end of the race and felt “flat”. Z Purton (COULDN’T CARE LESS) said it was anticipated the race would be run at a slow tempo and he was advised if the horse began satisfactorily carrying a light weight, it would be acceptable to have it travel in a midfield position which is further forward than usual. He said COULDN’T CARE LESS began well, he was able to obtain a position around midfield and whilst the horse made ground in the Straight, it did not show the same dash as it has in the past. He said in his opinion this was not due to COULDN’T CARE LESS being ridden further forward, but rather because of the slow tempo of the race in the early and middle stages, resulting in the race turning into a sprint home. He added COULDN’T CARE LESS was today racing in Class 4 and the horse of recent times has shown itself to be more suited racing in a lower grade. JOY TRUMPS and SPARKLE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of JOY TRUMPS after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, SPARKLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SPARKLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CARE FREE MIDAS, ONE TOUCH and CLASSIC REUNION were sent for sampling.
