OYSTER began awkwardly. From a wide barrier, CLEMENT SPIRIT was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Shortly after the start, NEW LEADER and BRIGHT SPIRITS were crowded for room between VIVA FREEDOM and TRAVEL PRINCE which shifted in. Passing the 700 Metres, TRAVEL PRINCE was checked away from the heels of BEST SCORER which, after reaching the lead, was steadied by its rider, C K Tong. VIVA FREEDOM, which was following TRAVEL PRINCE, was steadied away from the heels of that horse and in doing so shifted out, resulting in NEW LEADER being crowded for room for some distance inside OYSTER which itself became unbalanced when bumped by NEW LEADER. C K Tong was advised that whilst the Stewards were aware that BEST SCORER was having its first start today, he should ensure that he does not excessively steady the tempo of races. After the 700 Metres, CLEMENT SPIRIT was left racing wide and without cover. VIVA FREEDOM and NEW LEADER both had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. Near the 400 Metres, CLEMENT SPIRIT, FOREST STAR and BRIGHT SPIRITS were all taken wider by HIGH LUCK (D Beadman) which shifted out. D Beadman was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he exercises due care when shifting ground. Throughout the race, GILDED FLIGHT travelled wide and without cover. The performance of BEST SCORER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEST SCORER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of OYSTER after the race did not show any significant findings. VIVA FREEDOM, NEW LEADER and HIGH LUCK were sent for sampling.
