The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the opinion that an incident had occurred at the start which cast sufficient doubt on whether PRETTY ONE should be declared a non-runner. After taking evidence from Jockey W C Marwing, Trainer P F Yiu and Starter, Mr T McGovern, the Stewards found that after being loaded, PRETTY ONE became fractious and reared. As PRETTY ONE reared, it got its left hind leg on the barrier platform. PRETTY ONE’s left hind leg then remained on the barrier platform until after the start was effected. As a result, PRETTY ONE lost a considerable amount of ground and became detached from the field. As the Stewards were of the opinion that PRETTY ONE had not been afforded a fair start, the Stewards deemed that horse to be a non-runner. As this incident had been precipitated by PRETTY ONE becoming fractious and rearing in the stalls, the Stewards ruled that prior to being permitted to race again, the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. FINN MACCOOL was checked at the start when crowded for room between SUNSEEKER and INTELLECTUALSTRIDE which shifted out. WINNER SMART began awkwardly. From a wide barrier, RAINBOW SEEKER was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. For some distance approaching the 900 Metres, RAINBOW SEEKER raced tight between FINN MACCOOL and MAELSTROM. Passing the 100 Metres, FINN MACCOOL, which was closing off the race, was severely checked to avoid the heels of DANE PATROL which at this time was giving ground. When being checked, FINN MACCOOL shifted out away from the heels of DANE PATROL, resulting in RAINBOW SEEKER also being checked. When questioned, J Lloyd (INTELLECTUALSTRIDE) stated that making the first turn after the 850 Metres INTELLECTUALSTRIDE commenced to hang out badly. He said the horse continued to hang out rounding the Home Turn and for this reason at the entrance to the Straight he elected to shift INTELLECTUALSTRIDE to the inside of SUNSEEKER which at this time was shifting out. He said he did this to be able to race inside runners as he felt that if he continued to race to the outside of SUNSEEKER, INTELLECTUALSTRIDE would continue to hang out and therefore would not close off the race. He said when shifted to the inside of runners shortly after entering into the Straight, INTELLECTUALSTRIDE became balanced, commenced to race more genuinely and was able to finish off the race despite having to be shifted to the outside of PIZZAZZ near the 100 Metres when that horse shifted in. PRETTY ONE, POCKET ROCKETS and PIZZAZZ were sent for sampling.
