On arrival at the Start, it was noted that MASTER OF FORTUNE had lost its right front plate. This plate was refitted. MASTER OF FORTUNE was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race.
CIRCUIT NINE was slow to begin.
NORTHERN BEAST shifted in at the start and made contact with the hindquarters of PROSECCO, resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced.
RED HARE KING shifted out at the start and bumped RAINBOW LIGHT.
From the outside barrier, PRESIDENT’S CHOICE was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 300 Metres, DIAMOND WINNER was steadied when crowded by MASTER OF FORTUNE (C Y Ho) which shifted in when not clear. C Y Ho was reprimanded.
Near the 200 Metres, Apprentice Y L Chung (RED HARE KING) was obliged to stop riding and correct his mount when OSCAR GLORY shifted out.
Approaching the 200 Metres, CIRCUIT NINE improved into a tight run to the inside of FOREVER GLORIOUS which was giving ground.
Close to the finish, MASTER OF FORTUNE shifted in slightly and brushed PROSECCO.
OSCAR GLORY raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding his riding of RIGHT AS RAIN in the Straight, M Dee stated that making the Home Turn his mount was not travelling strongly and for this reason he was unable to shift out to follow MASTER OF FORTUNE into the race. He said after improving to the inside, he was unable to fully test RIGHT AS RAIN approaching the 300 Metres when NORTHERN BEAST shifted in. He added approaching the 200 Metres when PRESIDENT’S CHOICE improved to his inside, he again was not able to fully test his mount when positioned close to that runner and after PRESIDENT’S CHOICE improved into the event, he commenced to ride his mount along in an attempt to follow that runner. When questioned if there was an opportunity to ride his mount with more vigour near the 200 Metres. M Dee stated that as he was still concerned he may be positioned too close to PRESIDENT’S CHOICE, he was reluctant to fully ride his mount along at that stage. After considering his evidence, the Stewards advised M Dee that, wherever possible, he must ensure that he places the appropriate amount of vigour to his mounts.
After the race, H Bowman (NORTHERN BEAST) stated that his mount enjoyed a good run in the event. He added that when placed under pressure in the Home Straight NORTHERN BEAST took some time to respond to his riding and near the 250 Metres was disappointed for clear running between OSCAR GLORY and RED HARE KING which shifted in. He said he then shifted to the inside of OSCAR GLORY to obtain clear running whereby his mount finished in an one-paced manner to the line. A veterinary inspection of NORTHERN BEAST immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
