FASTER FASTER and ABLE STANDARD were slow to begin. After being ridden along to go forward in the early stages, when left racing wide on the track, DIAMOND FLYER was allowed to drift back to a position with cover after the 1000 Metres. After the 700 Metres, SHINING DRAGON was left racing wide and without cover, then shortly after straightening was hampered and carried wider when bumped by FASTER FASTER which when improving to the outside of ACTUARIAL TALENT was carried wider by that horse. In the circumstances, no action was taken. In the middle stages, DIAGHILEV hung out. At the 200 Metres, DIAGHILEV, which was closing the race off, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of FIRST DEGREE. K L Chui (TELECOM EMPEROR) explained the horse had travelled in a rearward position from wide barriers at it most recent starts when racing on the turf. He said tonight because the horse was racing on the all weather surface, he was asked to make use the horse's inside barrier and have it travel in a more forward position. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, PERFECT ATHLETE, Trainer C H Yip explained he had been disappointed with the horse's most recent start when racing over 1400 Metres on the turf at Sha Tin on 24 January 2009. He said on that occasion PERFECT ATHLETE in his opinion raced "flat". He said because of this he had given PERFECT ATHLETE a freshen up. He added whilst PERFECT ATHLETE had been placed over 1400 Metres previously, he believes the horse requires races over that distance to be run at a tempo to suit PERFECT ATHLETE and this did not occur when the horse was unable to obtain the outright lead at its most recent start. When questioned regarding the poor performance of FIRST DEGREE, B Doyle said the horse had performed poorly at its only previous start on the all weather surface. He said in his opinion FIRST DEGREE again did not handle the surface tonight. FIRST DEGREE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FIRST DEGREE after the race did not show any significant findings. BLUE SAINT was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, BLUE SAINT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, BLUE SAINT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PERFECT ATHLETE and ABLE STANDARD were sent for sampling. <5/3/2009 Additional Veterinary Report > FIRST DEGREE, which performed poorly, was examined by Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. FIRST DEGREE was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer T W Leung this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg with a sore tendon of the same leg. Before being allowed to race again, FIRST DEGREE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
