CLOVIS began very awkwardly and then shortly after the start blundered, resulting in its rider, G Cheyne, becoming badly unbalanced in the saddle and losing the use of his right stirrup iron for some distance. Because of this, CLOVIS lost ground. As the start was effected, METRO RIDER lifted its front feet off the ground and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between DR UNION and BEAUTIFUL CHOICE which shifted in. After this, METRO RIDER was taken across behind runners, however, in the early stages proved difficult to settle. FIERCE FORCE was slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, CLOVIS was taken out by WINNING STRATEGY, resulting in POLYGOLD, which was difficult to settle, being taken wider. Approaching the 600 Metres, METRO RIDER got its head on the side and hung out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FIERCE FORCE. Rounding the Home Turn, THE KID was taken wider by AMBITIOUS OWNER which shifted out to obtain clear running. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, MIGHTY FEELING was awkwardly placed when attempting to take a tight run between SEIZE THE DAY and AMBITIOUS OWNER. When disappointed for this run, MIGHTY FEELING was shifted out passing the 150 Metres to obtain clear running. After the 150 Metres, AMBITIOUS OWNER was bumped on the hindquarters by THE KID which got its head on the side and shifted in. For the majority of the race, DR UNION travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of POLYGOLD and WINNING STRATEGY after the race did not show any significant findings. SEIZE THE DAY and AMBITIOUS OWNER were sent for sampling.
