The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in whilst they considered if BEAUTY DAY had been afforded a fair start. Evidence was taken from Apprentice H T Mo, the rider of BEAUTY DAY, and the Starter, Mr A Speechley. Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of BEAUTY DAY, informed the Stewards that the matter could be resolved in his absence. After taking evidence from both parties and after viewing the videos, it was established that after being loaded into the barriers BEAUTY DAY stood well. Then as the start was effected, BEAUTY DAY lifted its head and turned it to the left, resulting in the horse being unable to jump with the field, losing a significant amount of ground and effectively taking no part in the race. All available videos of the start supported that the starting gate handler, who was assisting the horse, had at no stage influenced BEAUTY DAY in getting its head up and into the adjoining stall. As BEAUTY DAY had become fractious simultaneous with the start being effected, the Stewards ruled that that horse had been afforded a fair start and accordingly was deemed to be a runner. Before being allowed to race again, BEAUTY DAY will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
ELECTRIC LIGHTNING shifted out at the start and bumped LUCKY TIME which became unbalanced.
ENJOY LIFE began only fairly.
From wide barriers, ENORMOUS HONOUR and FORTUNE WAY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
YOURTHEWONFORME was left racing wide and without cover at the 1200 Metres.
At the 1200 Metres, SPORTS MASTER was checked away from the heels of ELECTRIC LIGHTNING which got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LUCKY TIME.
Approaching the 500 Metres, FORTUNE WAY was bumped and taken wider by LUCKY TIME which shifted out around the heels of YOURTHEWONFORME to improve.
At the entrance to the Straight, FORTUNE WAY shifted in towards LUCKY TIME. FORTUNE WAY was then corrected by its rider and shifted out. ELECTRIC LIGHTNING, which was racing to the outside of FORTUNE WAY, shifted out away from that horse, momentarily inconveniencing ENORMOUS HONOUR.
When questioned, B Prebble stated that ROYAL CHOCOLATE raced with its head on the side and lay out away from the running rail throughout the early and middle stages and dipped near the 650 Metres. He said rounding the Home Turn he attempted to get ROYAL CHOCOLATE to change its leading leg in an endeavour to have it finish off the race. He said however that ROYAL CHOCOLATE continued to lay out and proved difficult to ride. He added after passing the 50 Metres ROYAL CHOCOLATE shifted out abruptly and as he was concerned that the horse may have gone amiss, he did not ride it out to the end of the race. He said however that this did not have any adverse effect on the horse’s final placing. A veterinary inspection of ROYAL CHOCOLATE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, ROYAL CHOCOLATE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of INDIGENOUS STAR and YOURTHEWONFORME immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
TELECOM MAN and LUCKY TIME were sent for sampling.
