JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE stumbled at the start. On jumping, FLY HIGH knuckled. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, SUPER CHARGE failed to muster speed. SUPER CHARGE made the turn at the 600 Metres awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of FLY HIGH. After the 200 Metres, BRILLIANT ONE, which had been experiencing some difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied away from the heels of SUPER CHARGE. Close to the line, SUPER CHARGE was awkwardly placed outside MR COOL and close to the heels of CENTURY SUPER STAR. Because of this, SUPER CHARGE was not ridden out right to the end of the race as it normally would be. Throughout the race, SUPER GOAL MASTER travelled wide and without cover. E Saint-Martin (CONFUCIUS CLASSIC) said from an awkward barrier the intention had been to ride the horse at the rear on the rail. He said shortly after jumping CONFUCIUS CLASSIC was checked when crowded for room between SUPER GOAL MASTER and BAYVIEW GREYSLEW, both of which shifted ground. He said after this he commenced to shift across to the rail, CONFUCIUS CLASSIC did not show natural speed and because of this BAYVIEW GREYSLEW and BRILLIANT ONE which had drawn to his outside and were also being taken back were able to obtain a position in front of him. He said because of the manner in which it was ridden in the early stages of the race, CONFUCIUS CLASSIC was able to close the race off nicely. Apprentice K L Chui (SALUT BEAUTE) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position as is usual, however, his mount bounded in the air at the start, on landing blundered and as a consequence took time to muster speed. He said as a number of horses to his inside were being ridden to go forward, after the 1100 Metres he elected to steady his mount to obtain a position with cover. KINGIFLY, AMO and CENTURY SUPER STAR were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE and SALUT BEAUTE had lost their right front plates.
