TELECOM LUCKY STAR jumped very awkwardly, resulting in its rider, C W Wong, becoming unbalanced. TOP SPEED was slow to begin. After reaching the lead near the 900 Metres, MATSUKAZE was restrained by its rider, C K Tong. HAPPY SUNDAY, which was following, was checked off the heels of MATSUKAZE and shifted out, resulting in NOBLE ZOOM being taken wider. FAST WINNER, which was following NOBLE ZOOM, was also checked off the heels of that horse and as a result was shifted wider, then was allowed to stride forward into the lead. C K Tong was advised against the practice of unnecessarily steadying the pace and further advised a repetition may result in further action being taken. For some distance passing the 800 Metres, WITHALLMYHEART was checked away from the heels of MY SMARTIE. Approaching the 600 Metres, MAXIMUM CHARM, which was racing close to the heels of OPTIC KING, became unbalanced when crowded for room inside MY SMARTIE which in turn shifted in after being bumped on the hindquarters by GO STITCH. ACTUARIAL TALENT hung out in the middle stages. ENCOSTA DON hung in under pressure in the Straight. When questioned regarding his riding approaching the 1000 Metres, H W Lai (TOP SPEED) stated that he had been instructed to allow his mount plenty of galloping room. He said at this stage of the race he was behind ENCOSTA DON in a position one off the fence, however, was unable to maintain his position as a result of MAXIMUM CHARM shifting in towards his outside. H W Lai was told that wherever possible he should make every effort to maintain a favourable position. ENCOSTA DON and FAST WINNER were sent for sampling.
