As the start was effected, EXCEPTIONAL ART lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, ABLE SPEED was taken across behind runners. Passing the 1100 Metres, EUPHEMISM was steadied away from the heels of TURF EXPRESS which shifted in when only just clear. Approaching the 1000 Metres, SPARKLING POWER got its head up when racing close to the heels of CALIFORNIA MEMORY. GRAND DANCER travelled wide and without cover until near the 700 Metres. In the early part of the Straight, CALIFORNIA MEMORY hung out and then over the concluding stages was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SPARKLING POWER which itself got its head on the side and shifted out under pressure. Passing the 300 Metres, the whip of T Angland (BEST FRIEND) was knocked from his grasp by the whip if Apprentice K C Leung (ABLE SPEED). At the 200 Metres, EXPRESS WIN was momentarily crowded for room between TURF EXPRESS and CALIFORNIA MEMORY which shifted out whilst hanging. Near the 150 Metres, ABLE SPEED, which was closing off the race, was steadied away from the heels of DOUBLE LUCK which at this time shifted in slightly. Near the 50 Metres, B Doyle (SPARKLING POWER) dropped his left rein. In the Straight, DOUBLE LUCK got its head on the side, hung out and proved difficult to ride. Throughout the race, QUICK TOUCH travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of QUICK TOUCH after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. TURF EXPRESS and SPARKLING POWER were sent for sampling.
