GREAT LUCK was slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, MY WAY was steadied away from the heels of HAPPY EAGLE which shifted in when barely clear. For the majority of the race, VIVA GUY travelled wide and without cover. After the 600 Metres, HOW WONDERFUL got its head on the side and lay in behind HAPPY EAGLE. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MY WAY, W C Marwing stated that he was instructed to be positive on MY WAY in the early stages as it was at its most recent start when the horse raced well. He added it was anticipated that the step-up in distance to 1800 Metres tonight would be a benefit to MY WAY. He said he rode the horse along vigorously in the early stages in an attempt to obtain a forward position, however, MY WAY showed no early speed and consequently raced further back in the field than had been intended. He said MY WAY did not travel well at any stage and despite being ridden along in the Straight failed to close off the race. A veterinary inspection of MY WAY and RAIN OF THUNDER after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that VIVA GUY had lost its left front plate. COMPACT YARN and PRIVATE ROAD were sent for sampling.
