Trainer D J Hall was fined $5,000 for presenting MONSTER KAKA in the Parade Ring with a hood and pacifiers whereas the horse was also declared to race with cowls. MONSTER KAKA subsequently proceeded to the Start where the correct combination of gear was able to be fitted to the horse, however, the start of the race was consequently delayed. MONSTER KAKA began only fairly. BELLAGIO stood flat-footed as the start was effected and then refused to stretch out in the initial stages, losing a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, BELLAGIO will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial. Shortly after straightening, WORLD FAMOUS was checked when disappointed for a run between SOLAR WAI WAI and MAGNIFICENT. WORLD FAMOUS was then badly held up behind SOLAR WAI WAI until passing the 200 Metres. Passing the 150 Metres, MONSTER KAKA (M F Poon) shifted in under pressure, resulting in SOLAR WAI WAI and WORLD FAMOUS being hampered when crowded. M F Poon was reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. After being corrected, MONSTER KAKA again shifted in approaching the 50 Metres, resulting in SOLAR WAI WAI again being hampered when tightened for room between MONSTER KAKA and WORLD FAMOUS which got its head on the side and lay out. In this incident, SOLAR WAI WAI was struck across the head by the whip of M F Poon. FOLLOW ME was unable to obtain clear running from straightening until after passing the 50 Metres at which stage the horse shifted out in an endeavour to take a run between GOOD BEAUTY and WORLD FAMOUS. When WORLD FAMOUS shifted in due to contact with SOLAR WAI WAI, FOLLOW ME remained held up and was consequently unable to be fully tested at any stage in the Straight. Over the concluding stages, DECISIVE ACTION was steadied when awkwardly placed behind BIG BANG BONG and MONSTER KAKA, both of which shifted ground. As a consequence, DECISIVE ACTION was not ridden out all the way to the finishing line. In the Straight, BELLAGIO lay in and proved difficult to ride, particularly over the latter stages. MAGNIFICENT raced wide and without cover throughout the race and subsequently gave ground in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of SOLAR WAI WAI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. BAND OF BROTHERS and WAR ROOM were sent for sampling.
