PUERTO RICO was withdrawn on 1.7.08 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE (C W Wong). Before being allowed to race again, PUERTO RICO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BRILLIANT FLASH began awkwardly. VICTORY START and SIR LAGO were slow to begin. Despite being ridden along out of the gates, HAPPY ALL AROUND failed to muster speed. From the outside barrier, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE was taken back in the early stages and then in the middle stages proved difficult to settle. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, VINCERE was awkwardly placed inside TRIUMPH. At the 1300 Metres, BRILLIANT FLASH was crowded for room inside VICTORY START which shifted in when being steadied away from the heels of VINCERE. Near the 1200 Metres, AMAZING FORTUNE was steadied away from the heels of TRIUMPH which steadied the tempo after crossing to the fence in the lead. On three occasions approaching and passing the 250 Metres, WAVY PEAK was bumped and hampered by AMAZING FORTUNE (B Prebble) which at this time was shifted to the outside of TRIUMPH to obtain clear running. When WAVY PEAK was hampered after the 250 Meters, VINTAGE GOLD was momentarily steadied and shifted out away from the heels of that runner. In the circumstances, B Prebble was reprimanded. After the 200 Metres, BRILLIANT FLASH hung out. For the major part of the race, KEY WINNER travelled wide and without cover. WAVY PEAK was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WAVY PEAK after the race did not show any significant findings. AMAZING FORTUNE and VINTAGE GOLD were sent for sampling.
