MASTER GUNNER began awkwardly. From wide draws, INVINCIBLE HEART and CONFUCIUS CLASSIC were taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Approaching the 600 Metres, CAGA SPIRIT commenced to over-race and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GO FAY FAY. CAGA SPIRIT had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight. Near the 150 Metres, MASTER GUNNER was shifted out away from the heels of SOARING RIVER to continue improving. For the majority of the race, MASTER RIO travelled wide and without cover. W C Marwing stated that after beginning well, GO FAY FAY was following CHEETAH BOY in the early stages. He said when that horse steadied to allow other runners to improve near the 900 Metres, GO FAY FAY got its head up on a number of occasions when awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse. He said this resulted in GO FAY FAY racing further back in the field than had been hoped. He added after this GO FAY FAY travelled well and although he was not able to improve his position until rounding the Home Turn due to MASTER RIO racing to his outside, GO FAY FAY was somewhat disappointing in the manner in which it finished off the race which, in his opinion, was only fair. TURF MAGIC and WINDICATOR RETURNS were sent for sampling.
