AMAZING BREEDERS was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, ALWAYS SOMETHING was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, FLUKE and SUPER BRAND raced tight inside PEGASUS SUPREME which got its head on the side and shifted in. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, UPGRADING was momentarily tightened for room inside GREAT RENOWN. Approaching the 200 Metres, SUPER BRAND was checked and UPGRADING was crowded for room between JUN HUA (C W Wong) which shifted in and KICK SERVE which shifted out slightly. C W Wong was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he must make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. Passing the 200 Metres, PEGASUS SUPREME was steadied away from the heels of JUN HUA. In the Straight, GREAT RENOWN hung in. ALWAYS SOMETHING also lay in in the Straight. Throughout the race, JUN HUA travelled wide and without cover. G Mossé (GREAT RENOWN) was fined a sum of $2,000 for using the whip in the forehand manner down the horse’s shoulder on a number of occasions in the Straight. G Mossé had previously been spoken to regarding this matter. Apprentice C Y Ho pleaded guilty to a breach of Rule 100(2) in that he failed to ride UPGRADING, 6th placegetter, out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. For this breach of the Rule, Apprentice Ho was fined a sum of $15,000. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account C Y Ho’s status as an apprentice jockey. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PLENTIFUL which was racing at Happy Valley for only the second occasion tonight, Z Purton stated that the horse, which was wearing blinkers for the first time, became stirred up behind the barriers. He said passing the winning post on the first occasion PLENTIFUL became unbalanced after jumping a shadow on the track. He said after this PLENTIFUL did not relax and did not travel as comfortably as he had hoped. He added that he shifted PLENTIFUL out rounding the Home Turn and after being momentarily unable to obtain clear running near the 300 Metres PLENTIFUL then did not finish off its race. A veterinary inspection of PLENTIFUL after the race did not show any significant findings. PLENTIFUL, GREAT RENOWN and ALWAYS SOMETHING were sent for sampling.
