SPRING SMILES, which was fractious in its stall, was slow to begin. GENIUS MASTER began awkwardly and stumbled. STORM’S DESTINY was slow into stride and then was taken across behind runners. In the early stages, KINGSTON TEMPLE drifted back. For the major part of the race, TALE OF FRIENDSHIP was left racing wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SPRING SMILES, D Beadman said his mount was reluctant to stride out in the early stages of the race and because of this he pulled the whip on his mount shortly after the start. He said he continued to ride SPRING SMILES along hands and heels in the middle stages of the race. He said when the tempo quickened leaving the Back Straight, SPRING SMILES immediately came off the bridle and did not respond to his riding. He was not able to offer an explanation for the performance of the horse. SPRING SMILES was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPRING SMILES after the race did not show any significant findings. ENERGETIC BOY and STORM’S DESTINY were sent for sampling.
