At the time of declaration, O Doleuze was declared as the rider of both LUCKY QUALITY and SUPREME COMMANDER. The explanations submitted by O Doleuze and Trainer P O’Sullivan (SUPREME COMMANDER) were accepted and no further action was taken. F Coetzee was substituted as the rider of SUPREME COMMANDER. LUCKY QUALITY had an adjustment made to its right front plate in the saddling stalls prior to entering the Parade Ring. LUCKY QUALITY was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. ABLE DANCER began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, HEART TO HEART was steadied and BEJEWELED and NEWSWIRE TOO crowded for room between ABLE DANCER and TOUT VA BIEN which was carried out by SUPER PLUS which in turn was carried out by WEALTH SYNERGY which shifted ground. ME THE BEST failed to muster speed in the early stages. Over the final 600 Metres, SUPER PLUS hung out. For the majority of the race, NEWSWIRE TOO hung out and near the 500 Metres was steadied away from the heels of BEJEWELED. At the 350 Metres, BEJEWELED was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SUPER PLUS which shifted out. Over about the last 50 Metres, SUPERNOVA, which had been hanging in, was not able to obtain clear running and because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. REUNION was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, REUNION was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings other than the horse had lost both its front plates. SUPER PLUS and BEJEWELED were sent for sampling.
