HONEST WITNESS

On 7/9, in a Sha Tin turf barrier trial over 800m (running positions: 5-5-6), the horse showed good early speed, settled mid-division, and performed reasonably. In his first start this season, two months ago he ran poorly over 1200m on Happy Valley turf; he was allowed to run freely but weakened in the final stages, suffering a heavy defeat. After a trial session, he did not show much improvement ("did not add strength"). In a recent Happy Valley sprint trial, this race requires an extra six pounds, and the time figures were weak; his closing speed was slightly inferior. The jockey and trainer do not appear particularly in sync, but he possesses the ability to lead out early and drew an advantageous barrier draw, though no clear opportunity was seen.
